ACC Grants Six-Month Service Extension to Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang in Public Interest

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has officially sanctioned a six-month service extension for Ms. Idashisha Nongrang, a distinguished 1992-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, who is currently serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya.

The high-level committee approved the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), ensuring that the senior police official will continue to lead the state’s police force beyond her scheduled superannuation date of May 19, 2026.

Special Relaxation in Public Interest

The decision to extend Ms. Nongrang’s tenure has been made as a special case in the public interest. To facilitate this extension, the Central Government has exercised a specific relaxation of Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. This rule generally governs the retirement age and service conditions of officers belonging to the All India Services.

Continuity in Leadership

Ms. Nongrang, who made history as the first local woman to be appointed as the permanent Director General of Police in Meghalaya, is widely respected for her administrative acumen and deep understanding of the region’s security landscape. The extension is viewed as a strategic move to ensure administrative stability and continuity in the state’s law enforcement leadership during a critical period.

As per the official notification, her extended term will commence immediately following the conclusion of her regular tenure on May 19, 2026, and will remain in effect for a duration of six months or until further orders are issued.
