Odisha Faces Severe IAS, IPS, IFS Shortages as CM Majhi Urges Centre for Fast Appointments
Odisha is facing a major shortage of officers in the IAS, IPS, and IFS cadres, prompting Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to urge the Central Government to act quickly. While addressing the Odisha Assembly, the Chief Minister explained that the state is struggling with a serious gap in key administrative posts, which is affecting day-to-day governance and timely delivery of public services. His remarks came in response to a question raised by BJD MLA Pratap Keshari Deb.
As per the information shared in the Assembly, Odisha currently has 46 vacant IAS posts, 67 vacant IPS posts, and 70 unfilled IFS positions. These gaps have become a challenge for the administration, slowing down development work and limiting the government’s ability to execute projects effectively at the ground level.
Cadre Strength and Shortfalls: The Current Situation
The official approved strength of the different All India Services in the state, along with the number of vacancies, is listed below:
IAS: 248 sanctioned posts, 46 vacant
IPS: 195 sanctioned posts, 67 vacant
IFS: 141 sanctioned posts, 70 vacant
These numbers clearly show that Odisha urgently needs more officers to maintain smooth governance and improve public service systems.
Centre Responsible for Filling Vacancies; Odisha Maintains Active Coordination
The Chief Minister noted that since these posts fall under the All India Services category, only the Central Government can make the necessary appointments. He assured the House that the state government is in regular communication with the Centre to speed up the process and ensure that the empty posts are filled soon.
He added that although the shortage of officers has created hurdles in administration, both the state and the Union Government are working together to rebuild the full strength of the cadres as quickly as possible.
Strengthened Cadres Needed for Better Governance
The Chief Minister stressed that early appointment of officers is essential for maintaining efficient governance, implementing development initiatives without delays, and ensuring that citizens receive government services on time. With active cooperation between the state and the Centre, Odisha hopes to gradually overcome these shortages and improve overall administrative performance in the coming months.
