IPS Om Prakash Singh Appointed as Haryana’s New DGP Amidst Ongoing Puran Kumar Case Turmoil
Amid heightened attention surrounding the death of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, the Haryana Government has announced the appointment of Om Prakash (O. P.) Singh, a 1992-batch IPS officer, as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. Singh will serve in an additional charge capacity during the leave period of the current DGP, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, who also belongs to the 1992 batch.
Official Notification Released
The Home Department issued a formal order undersigned by Sumita Mishra Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), confirming the decision. The notification reads:
“The Governor of Haryana is pleased to entrust the additional responsibility of Director General of Police, Haryana, to Om Prakash Singh, IPS (1992 RR), during the leave tenure of Shatrujeet Singh Kapur.”
At present, O. P. Singh also oversees several critical institutions in the state — he serves as the Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Director General of the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB), and Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) located in Madhuban.
A Distinguished Career Spanning Over 32 Years
Having completed more than three decades in policing, O. P. Singh is widely regarded as one of Haryana’s most experienced officers. Over the years, he has held a range of significant assignments, including:
Superintendent of Police (SP) in five different districts
Commissioner of Police in both Ambala–Panchkula and Faridabad
Inspector General (IG) of Hisar and Rewari Ranges
Served at the Union Ministry of Finance (2004–2007), where he helped frame the Rules of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and played a pivotal role in registering the first-ever case under the law.
Leadership in Sports and Youth Development
Between 2008 and 2012, Singh headed the Department of Sports, Haryana, where he introduced several innovative initiatives to transform sports participation across the state. His notable contributions include:
Creating the PIE Model (Participation, Inclusion & Excellence) for developing grassroots sports infrastructure
Launching the SPAT Scholarship Scheme under the ‘Play for India’ campaign, which successfully drew participation from over one million children statewide.
