ONGC Strengthens Board with Appointment of Senior IAS Officer Vinod Seshan as Government Nominee Director for Three-Year Term

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), India’s largest state-owned energy major, has announced the appointment of senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Vinod Seshan as a Government Nominee Director on its Board. His appointment, effective from March 9, 2026, will be valid for a period of three years on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The decision was formally approved by ONGC’s Board of Directors and subsequently disclosed to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE Limited in compliance with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015. The company has clarified that Seshan is not debarred from holding the office of director by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) or any other regulatory authority, and further confirmed that he has no relationship with other members of the ONGC Board.

Background of Vinod Seshan

Vinod Seshan is a 2008-batch IAS officer from the Assam cadre and currently serves as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG). He brings with him over two decades of professional experience, including more than 17 years in policy-making, infrastructure development, project management, district administration, and crisis response.

Throughout his distinguished career, Seshan has held multiple leadership roles as an administrator, team leader, and project director, contributing significantly to government initiatives and developmental projects. His expertise spans governance, public sector management, and strategic planning, making him a valuable addition to ONGC’s leadership structure.

Seshan has earlier served on the Boards of major public sector energy companies, including:

Oil India Limited (OIL)

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)

Education and Early Career

Before joining the civil services, Seshan worked in India’s software services sector, where he handled responsibilities related to software development, testing, and knowledge management.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka. He further pursued advanced studies abroad, earning Master’s degrees in Public Policy and Infrastructure, Investment and Finance from University College London (UCL).

His professional interests include large-scale infrastructure development, innovative financing models, and sustainable development initiatives, reflecting his commitment to modernizing India’s energy and infrastructure landscape.
