IAS Officer Ashish Vachhani’s Tenure in Prime Minister’s Office Extended Until 2028
In a significant administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of Shri Ashish Vachhani’s central deputation in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for an additional two years. The decision, announced on May 2, 2026, ensures that Vachhani, a seasoned 1997-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, will continue to serve as Additional Secretary in the PMO until May 23, 2028.
His tenure was originally set to conclude on May 23, 2026, but the extension reflects the government’s confidence in his expertise and contributions to economic and financial policymaking at the highest level.
Shri Ashish Vachhani currently holds the position of Additional Secretary in the PMO, where he specializes in matters related to economic and financial policy. His role involves advising and assisting the Prime Minister’s Office on critical issues of public finance, fiscal management, and economic governance.
Known for his sharp analytical skills and deep understanding of budgetary processes, Vachhani has played a pivotal role in shaping policy directions that align with India’s broader economic objectives.
Before his appointment to the PMO in May 2025, Vachhani served as Additional Secretary (Budget) in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the Ministry of Finance. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the preparation and management of the Union Budget, a task that requires precision, foresight, and coordination across multiple government departments.
His earlier assignments also include serving as Joint Secretary in the DEA, where he contributed to policy formulation in areas such as fiscal consolidation and expenditure management. Additionally, he has imparted his knowledge as a faculty member at the prestigious Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), training future civil servants in governance and public administration.
Vachhani’s career trajectory reflects a steady rise through the ranks of the IAS, marked by a series of challenging and impactful assignments. He began his career in the Tamil Nadu cadre as a Sub-Collector in Sivakasi, where he gained firsthand experience in district administration and grassroots governance.
Over the years, his work has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, with a particular focus on financial management and policy innovation. His transition from the Ministry of Finance to the PMO in 2025 was seen as a strategic move, bringing his expertise in budgetary and economic affairs directly into the Prime Minister’s advisory framework.
The extension of his tenure underscores the importance of continuity in key administrative positions, especially in areas that directly influence the country’s economic stability and growth. With India navigating complex global economic challenges, the presence of experienced officers like Vachhani in the PMO is considered vital for ensuring informed decision-making and effective policy execution.
His extended deputation is expected to further strengthen the PMO’s capacity to address fiscal and economic issues with clarity and precision.
Shri Ashish Vachhani’s career exemplifies the role of dedicated civil servants in shaping India’s governance and economic landscape. His continued presence in the PMO until 2028 is likely to contribute significantly to the government’s efforts in steering the nation’s financial and economic policies in a rapidly evolving global environment.
