Centre Extends Tenures of Rakesh Gupta and Satish T J; IRS Officer Rajesh Kumar Meena Appointed Deputy Secretary
The Central government has approved a series of senior-level appointments and tenure extensions involving officers posted in key departments, including the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Staff Selection Commission and Department of School Education & Literacy.
The latest orders cover three officers and include two extensions of tenure and one fresh appointment. Rakesh Gupta, IAS (1997: HY), has been given a two-year extension as Additional Secretary in the Department of Health & Family Welfare, while Satish T J, IDAS (2010), has received a six-month extension as Secretary-cum-Controller of Examination at the Staff Selection Commission.
In another significant move, Rajesh Kumar Meena, IRS (C&IT: 2015), has been appointed as Deputy Secretary in the Department of School Education & Literacy for a four-year tenure.
Rakesh Gupta Gets Two-Year Extension in Health Ministry
Senior IAS officer Rakesh Gupta (IAS: 1997: HY) will continue as Additional Secretary in the Department of Health & Family Welfare after the Centre approved an extension of his tenure.
Gupta’s existing tenure was scheduled to end on September 14, 2026. Under the latest decision, he will now continue in the post for another two years, with his extended tenure running up to September 14, 2028.
The extension will allow the 1997-batch Haryana cadre IAS officer to continue handling his existing responsibilities in the Health & Family Welfare Department. The department deals with several important areas of the country’s public health administration, making the continuation of senior officers in key positions significant from an administrative continuity perspective.
Gupta’s extended tenure will also ensure that ongoing work under his charge continues without an immediate change at the Additional Secretary level. His experience in the Central government will remain available to the department for another two years.
Satish T J Gets Six-Month Extension at Staff Selection Commission
The Centre has also approved a six-month extension for Satish T J (IDAS: 2010), who is serving as Secretary-cum-Controller of Examination at the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) at the Director level.
His existing tenure was due to end on August 31, 2026. Following the latest order, Satish T J will continue in the position until February 28, 2027.
The Staff Selection Commission plays a major role in the Central government’s recruitment system and conducts examinations for appointments to a wide range of posts across ministries, departments and subordinate offices.
The Secretary-cum-Controller of Examination is an important administrative position within the commission, particularly given the scale of recruitment examinations conducted by the SSC every year. The extension of Satish T J is therefore expected to provide continuity in the commission’s examination-related and administrative functions.
An officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), Satish T J has been serving at the SSC on central deputation. His extended tenure will now continue for another six months beyond the original end date.
Rajesh Kumar Meena Appointed Deputy Secretary in School Education Department
The third order involves Rajesh Kumar Meena (IRS C&IT: 2015), who has been appointed as Deputy Secretary in the Department of School Education & Literacy.
Meena, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service, Customs & Indirect Taxes (IRS C&IT), belongs to the 2015 batch. His appointment is for a period of four years.
The new assignment will bring Meena into the administrative structure of the Department of School Education & Literacy, which functions under the Ministry of Education and is responsible for important areas relating to school education, literacy and associated government programmes.
The appointment also reflects the movement of officers from specialised central services into broader policy and administrative positions in different ministries and departments.
As Deputy Secretary, Meena will be part of the department’s senior administrative machinery and will handle responsibilities assigned to him by the ministry. The four-year tenure provides a substantial period for him to work on departmental programmes and policy-related matters.
Three Officers, Three Important Changes
The latest set of orders brings changes involving three officers from different services. While Gupta and Satish T J will continue in their existing assignments after their respective extensions, Meena will take up a new responsibility in the School Education & Literacy Department.
The three decisions also cover different levels of government administration. Gupta’s continuation is at the Additional Secretary level, Satish T J will remain in a Director-level position at the SSC, while Meena joins the School Education & Literacy Department as Deputy Secretary.
Such tenure extensions are generally important for maintaining continuity in departments where officers are already familiar with ongoing programmes, administrative processes and institutional responsibilities. At the same time, fresh appointments such as that of Meena help bring officers from different services into specialised policy and administrative roles.
The latest decisions underline the Centre’s continuing exercise of extending the tenure of experienced officers in key positions while also making fresh appointments to strengthen administrative capacity across important departments.
For Rakesh Gupta, the two-year extension means he will remain in the Department of Health & Family Welfare until September 2028. Satish T J will continue at the Staff Selection Commission until February 2027, while Rajesh Kumar Meena begins a four-year stint in the Department of School Education & Literacy.
