The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension in the service of Dr. T.V. Somanathan, IAS (Tamil Nadu:1987) as Cabinet Secretary. The decision will allow Somanathan to continue in India’s top bureaucratic post beyond his existing tenure, which was scheduled to end on August 30, 2026.
According to the order issued by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Somanathan has been granted an extension for a further period of one year beyond August 30, 2026. He will therefore continue as Cabinet Secretary until August 30, 2027, subject to the formal terms of the order.
The decision comes through an official communication dated August 5, 2026, issued from New Delhi by Manisha Saxena, Secretary to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and Establishment Officer. The order has been circulated to senior constitutional authorities, the Union government, state governments and other offices concerned.
Somanathan to continue as Cabinet Secretary
Dr. T.V. Somanathan is a senior IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre and has been serving as Cabinet Secretary, the highest-ranking civil servant in the Government of India. The ACC’s decision means that Somanathan will continue in this crucial coordinating role for another year. His existing tenure was due to end on August 30, 2026, but the latest decision extends his service beyond that date.

The Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training and the Secretary (Coordination and Public Grievances) in the Cabinet Secretariat have also been informed. Copies have been sent to all Secretaries to the Government of India as per the standard distribution list.
The offices of the Union Home Minister, all Union Ministers and the Minister of State for Personnel have also been included in the circulation list.
The concerned officer and Chief Secretaries of all states have been formally informed about the ACC decision as well.
Cabinet Secretariat also informed
The order specifically refers to the Cabinet Secretariat and its earlier communication, including the reference to Deputy No. 01/01/2019-CS(A) dated August 5, 2026. The communication was also marked to Kavita Singh, Joint Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat, for information and necessary action.
Other recipients include the Director General (Media and Communication) at the Press Information Bureau, the Editor of Civil Services News and the Deputy Secretary in the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances.
The Personnel Ministry’s relevant offices, including the National Informatics Centre, DoPT, and the offices connected with the Establishment Officer, have also been provided copies for official records.
