Modi Government Approves Extension Ahead of Scheduled Retirement
In a significant move, the Government of India has approved a one-year extension in service for Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan (IAS:1989:Sikkim cadre), ahead of his anticipated retirement. As per an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Friday, Mohan will continue to serve in his role until August 22, 2026, or until further orders—whichever is earlier.
The extension has been granted by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) under the provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
A Signal of Trust and Continuity
Govind Mohan was appointed as Union Home Secretary on August 14, 2024, and assumed charge on August 22, 2024, following the retirement of his predecessor, Ashok Bhalla (IAS:1984:AM), who completed a full five-year term. The extension is widely seen as a vote of confidence in Mohan’s leadership, particularly at a time when national priorities include internal security, border management, and growing cyber threats.
A seasoned bureaucrat from the Sikkim cadre, Mohan has held several key positions across both central and state governments, with expertise in home affairs, personnel management, and cultural administration. His continued tenure is expected to ensure administrative stability during a politically sensitive period marked by upcoming state elections and the implementation of critical policy initiatives.
