UP: 2006-Batch Officer Faces BJP Allegations Over Varanasi MLC Vote Counting

Who Is IAS Pranjal Yadav? 2006-Batch Officer Faces BJP Allegations Over Varanasi MLC Vote Counting

Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Pranjal Yadav has once again found himself at the centre of a political controversy after BJP leaders questioned his impartiality during the counting of votes for the Varanasi Graduate Constituency of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. The allegations have revived memories of a 2014 dispute involving permission for a proposed election rally by Narendra Modi in Varanasi, when Yadav was serving as the district magistrate.

A fresh political controversy has brought 2006-batch IAS officer Pranjal Yadav into the spotlight. BJP leaders and party workers have raised questions over his conduct as election observer during the Varanasi Graduate Constituency MLC vote counting, which began on October 27 and continued into October 28.

The BJP alleged that Yadav was not acting impartially and accused him of favouring the Samajwadi Party candidate. The allegations triggered protests outside the counting centre at Paharia Mandi in Varanasi, with party workers demanding action against the officer. Although the claims have intensified the political debate, allegations of bias have not, by themselves, established any wrongdoing on the officer’s part.

Who Is IAS Pranjal Yadav?

Pranjal Yadav is a 2006-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. An engineering graduate with a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering, he has held several important administrative responsibilities during his career.

One of his most prominent assignments was as District Magistrate of Varanasi, a position he assumed in 2013. His tenure coincided with the politically significant 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when Varanasi became the centre of national attention following Narendra Modi’s decision to contest from the constituency. Yadav has subsequently served in various administrative capacities and state government departments in Uttar Pradesh.

Why Did IAS Pranjal Yadav Face Controversy During the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections?

Yadav’s name first attracted considerable political attention during the 2014 general elections, when he was serving as Varanasi District Magistrate. At the time, Narendra Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, was contesting the Lok Sabha election from Varanasi. A major controversy erupted over permission for a proposed BJP election rally at Beniabagh ground.

The BJP strongly objected to the decision not to grant permission for the proposed gathering. The issue quickly escalated into a political confrontation, with the party questioning the administration’s decision during a crucial phase of the election campaign.

As the district’s chief administrative officer, Yadav came under scrutiny over the matter. The episode brought him into the national political debate and became a notable chapter of his tenure in Varanasi.

BJP Questions Pranjal Yadav’s Role in Varanasi MLC Vote Counting

More than a decade later, Yadav has again become the subject of political criticism in Varanasi, this time over the Legislative Council election. He was assigned the responsibility of election observer for the Varanasi Graduate Constituency. Polling for the relevant Legislative Council constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Bihar was held on October 23, while counting in Varanasi commenced on October 27.

The counting process witnessed considerable political tension. BJP candidate Kedarnath Singh and his supporters objected to the proceedings and questioned the role of the election observer.

BJP leaders alleged that the counting process was being conducted in a manner favourable to the Samajwadi Party candidate. Party workers subsequently staged protests outside the counting centre at Paharia Mandi and raised slogans against both Pranjal Yadav and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. The BJP maintained that the election process should be transparent and impartial and demanded accountability over the alleged irregularities.

BJP Demands Action Amid Allegations of Electoral Bias

The controversy intensified as BJP representatives questioned the conduct of the counting process and demanded action against the election observer. The political confrontat ion also involved allegations from the Samajwadi Party camp. Akhilesh Yadav raised concerns over the handling of the results, alleging that the declaration of victory for his party’s candidate was being delayed or withheld.

The competing allegations added another dimension to the controversy, turning the Varanasi MLC counting process into a political flashpoint. However, the accusations made by the rival political parties need to be distinguished from any officially established findings. An independent determination of the facts would be necessary to establish whether there were procedural irregularities or any breach of electoral impartiality.

Why Is Pranjal Yadav’s 2014 Controversy Back in Focus?

The latest developments have once again drawn attention to Yadav’s earlier tenure as Varanasi District Magistrate. BJP leaders have recalled the 2014 Beniabagh rally-permission controversy while questioning his impartiality in the current MLC election assignment.

The two incidents, separated by more than twelve years, have placed the IAS officer at the centre of political debate in Varanasi on two significant electoral occasions. While the 2014 episode involved the administration’s decision on a proposed election rally, the latest controversy concerns allegations surrounding the conduct of MLC vote counting.

For now, the allegations against Yadav remain political claims rather than established findings of misconduct. Any definitive conclusion will depend on the outcome of the appropriate official scrutiny of the counting process.
