Raghuveer Lal Takes Over as Kanpur Police Commissioner; Akhil Kumar Moves to Central Posting
The Uttar Pradesh government has carried out a notable reshuffle in the police department, transferring four senior IPS officers on Monday. Among the major changes, Kanpur Police Commissioner Akhil Kumar has been relieved from his charge barely a month after his appointment. The post will now be occupied by Raghuveer Lal, a 1997-batch IPS officer who was previously serving as Additional Director General (ADG), Security.
Key Appointments and Transfers
Raghuveer Lal (IPS, 1997 batch)
Named the new Police Commissioner of Kanpur, succeeding Akhil Kumar.
Until now, he was functioning as ADG (Security).
Akhil Kumar (IPS, 1994 batch)
Relieved of his position as Kanpur Commissioner.
Has already been appointed as Managing Director and CEO of Digital India Corporation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology at the Centre.
Deepesh Juneja (IPS, 1992 batch)
Released from the additional responsibility of Director General (Prosecution), CID.
Continues to serve as Director General, Prosecution, Uttar Pradesh.
Juneja has been a central figure in the prosecution division. He took charge as ADG (Prosecution) on May 19, 2023, and was elevated to DG on January 1, 2025. Alongside his primary role, he was overseeing CID as DG. He will now focus exclusively on the prosecution department.
Vinod Kumar Singh (IPS, 1994 batch)
Presently serving as DG (Cyber Crime).
Assigned the additional role of DG, CID.
Singh was promoted from ADG to DG on August 12, succeeding Anand Swarup who had moved on central deputation. Initially without a designated post, he was later given charge of Cyber Crime and has now been handed additional responsibility for CID.
Tarun Gaba (IPS, 2001 batch)
Inspector General (IG), Lucknow Range, appointed as IG (Security).
Will continue to hold dual charge of Lucknow Range.
Gaba’s career has seen several shifts. He was removed from the post of Police Commissioner, Prayagraj, and reappointed as IG, Lucknow Range—a position he had earlier held. He has also served in key roles within the Home Department. Now, he replaces Raghuveer Lal as IG (Security) while simultaneously retaining his Lucknow Range responsibilities.
