In a noteworthy administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has designated IRS officer Vivek Chaturvedi as a Member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
A 1990-batch officer of the IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes), Mr. Chaturvedi is presently serving as the Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer at CBIC. He will assume charge in succession to Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), whose tenure concluded on August 31, 2025.
Major Leadership Transition at CBIC
Mr. Chaturvedi’s elevation comes at a pivotal moment of leadership transition within the CBIC. Following the retirement of Mr. Vivek Ranjan, two additional senior members — including the incumbent CBIC Chairman — are scheduled to demit office on November 30, 2025.
His appointment, therefore, represents the first in a series of anticipated high-level changes in India’s indirect tax administration over the forthcoming months.
Vigilance Credentials and Policy Proficiency
Endowed with deep expertise in vigilance, compliance, and tax administration, Mr. Chaturvedi is widely regarded as a seasoned officer well-equipped to guide the CBIC through its agenda of policy refinement and compliance reinforcement.
His tenure as Chief Vigilance Officer is particularly noteworthy, as it underlines the government’s continuing emphasis on transparency, accountability, and integrity within its tax institutions.
Ensuring Continuity in a Dynamic Tax Environment
Mr. Chaturvedi’s appointment further reflects the Centre’s determination to preserve stability and continuity in leadership amidst a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape, shaped by ongoing GST reforms, enhanced compliance requirements, and the progressive digitization of customs procedures.
With more than three decades of distinguished service, his experience is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the streamlining of indirect tax policy as well as fortifying enforcement mechanisms under CBIC’s mandate.
