Mr. Asok Kumar G, a retired IAS officer (1991 batch, Telangana cadre), and former Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (2022–2024), offered valuable insights on river rejuvenation at a special event in Delhi. With decades of experience in water conservation, Mr. Kumar’s contributions remain influential, especially in the context of the Yamuna River’s growing environmental crisis.

The Yamuna, also known as Kalindi, is not only the largest tributary of the Ganga but also holds deep religious, cultural, and civilizational importance. Today, however, this sacred river is at risk. Pollution, mismanagement, and years of neglect—particularly along the 22-kilometre stretch in Delhi—have severely degraded its condition.

Drawing on his leadership of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the success of the widely acclaimed “Catch the Rain” campaign during his time at the National Water Mission, Mr. Kumar—popularly referred to as India’s “Rain Man”—continues to advocate for sustainable water management and river restoration, even post-retirement.

His upcoming talk, titled “Rejuvenating Yamuna: Learning from the Ganga Experience,” will delve into actionable strategies and policy recommendations based on his hands-on experience with the Ganga clean-up mission. The event is scheduled for May 23 at 6 PM, Conference Room 1, Main Building, India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi.

The urgency of reviving the Yamuna is increasingly evident. While previous efforts, particularly under the AAP-led Delhi government, fell short of key targets, the newly elected BJP administration has signaled a more determined stance, including a symbolic cabinet visit to the riverbanks shortly after taking office.

At this pivotal moment, Mr. Asok Kumar’s expertise offers a guiding light—and perhaps, a roadmap—to restoring one of India’s most iconic rivers.
