Manoj Kumar Mohapatra Appointed as India’s Next Ambassador to Romania

Senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Guatemala, has been appointed as the next Ambassador to Romania. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs, and he is expected to take up his new assignment soon.

A 2000-batch IFS officer, Mohapatra brings more than 20 years of diplomatic experience, with notable expertise in both bilateral diplomacy and international trade. In February 2022, he was concurrently accredited as Ambassador to El Salvador and Honduras, in addition to his role in Guatemala, which he has held since December 2021.

Before his posting in Central America, Mohapatra served as Minister (Commerce) at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. (from July 2019), where he played a key role in advancing Indo-U.S. trade relations.

He holds a Master’s degree in Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDIBM), showcasing a unique blend of scientific insight and administrative capability.

India–Romania Relations

India and Romania share a deep-rooted diplomatic relationship, formally established in 1948 and elevated to ambassadorial level in 1968. In 2023, the two countries marked 75 years of diplomatic ties, celebrating ongoing cooperation in trade, culture, and global diplomacy. Mohapatra’s appointment comes at a time when both nations are looking to further strengthen these long-standing ties.
