The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has formally cleared the appointment of senior Indian Police Service officer Shri Rakesh Aggarwal as the new Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Shri Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as Special Director General in the NIA. Following the ACC’s approval, he will now assume charge as Director General of the National Investigation Agency, holding the apex post in India’s premier counter-terrorism and national security investigation body.

His appointment has been sanctioned at Level-16 of the Central Pay Matrix and will become effective from the date he officially takes charge of the post. Shri Aggarwal will continue in the role until 31 August 2028, which marks the date of his superannuation, or until further government instructions are issued, whichever occurs earlier.

The elevation of Shri Aggarwal is expected to further strengthen the leadership of the NIA at a time when national security, counter-terrorism operations and inter-agency coordination remain key priorities of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
