Rajasthan Bureaucracy Set for Major Reinforcement: 28 New IAS Officers to Join Through Promotions, Direct Recruitment, and Induction from Other Services
Rajasthan’s administrative framework is poised for a significant boost this year, with the induction of 28 new IAS officers. The appointments will help bridge the long‑standing shortage in the state’s bureaucracy and will be made through three distinct channels—promotion from the Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS), direct recruitment via the Civil Services Examination (CSE‑2024), and induction from other state services.
Current IAS Cadre Strength in Rajasthan
The sanctioned cadre strength for IAS officers in Rajasthan stands at 332, but only 278 officers are currently in service, leaving a considerable gap in administrative capacity. With the addition of 28 officers, the working strength is expected to rise to nearly 300. However, this figure will again be impacted as 15 IAS officers are scheduled to retire during the year.
18 IAS Officers to Be Promoted from RAS
According to the Personnel Department, the largest share of new appointments—18 officers—will come through promotion from the Rajasthan Administrative Service.
In 2025, 15 IAS officers who had earlier been promoted from the State Service retired, creating vacancies. Consequently, 15 eligible RAS officers will be promoted to IAS this year. Additionally, three promotions against vacancies from 2024 could not be completed last year due to procedural delays. These promotions will now be finalized in 2026. Taken together, Rajasthan will secure 18 IAS officers through RAS promotions.
Four IAS Officers from Other Services Expected Soon
The state is also set to receive four IAS officers promoted from other state services against the 2024 vacancies, likely within the current month.
The promotion process is in its final stage, with interviews of 20 officers from various services already conducted. Following recommendations, the Chief Minister has approved the promotion of four officers. Once the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) clears the proposal, the Central Department of Personnel will issue a formal notification announcing their names.
Six IAS Officers Through CSE‑2024 Allocation
Rajasthan will also gain six IAS officers through direct recruitment under the Civil Services Examination‑2024. The central government has allocated 180 IAS officers nationwide, with state‑wise distribution finalized.
Under this allocation:
Rajasthan will receive six officers.
Two officers will be from Rajasthan (one OBC, one ST).
Four officers will be from other states (three OBC, one General).
These officers will join the Rajasthan cadre after completing their training.
Extension of Bishnu Charan Malik’s Deputation
In a related development, the central government has extended the deputation tenure of IAS officer Bishnu Charan Malik, who currently serves as Director of Census Operations and Director of Citizen Registration in Rajasthan.
According to the order issued by the Central Department of Personnel, his deputation has been extended for three months, until March 31, or until further instructions are issued, whichever comes earlier.
Strengthening Administrative Capacity
The combined induction of officers through promotions, direct recruitment, and service transfers is expected to significantly strengthen Rajasthan’s governance structure. The move will improve administrative efficiency, reduce workload pressures on existing officers, and stabilize the state’s bureaucratic machinery. Despite the upcoming retirements, the addition of 28 IAS officers is seen as a crucial step toward reinforcing Rajasthan’s administrative backbone.
