Who Will Be the Next CEO of NITI Aayog? Government Eyes Union Secretaries After B.V.R. Subrahmanyam’s Exit
New Delhi: The search for the next chief of NITI Aayog has begun after the completion of the tenure of B. V. R. Subrahmanyam as Chief Executive Officer of India’s premier policy think tank. Following the end of his extended tenure on February 23, 2026, the government moved swiftly to ensure continuity by appointing Nidhi Chhibber as the interim chief, sparking widespread speculation in bureaucratic and policy circles over who will eventually take charge of the post on a permanent basis.
While the interim arrangement ensures that the functioning of the institution continues without disruption, indications suggest that the government may soon appoint a full-time CEO from among serving Union Secretaries.
Interim Arrangement After Subrahmanyam’s Tenure Ends
B. V. R. Subrahmanyam completed his extended tenure as CEO of NITI Aayog on February 23, 2026.
Soon after his exit, the government appointed Nidhi Chhibber as interim chief on February 24 to ensure that the policy think tank continues to function smoothly during the transition period.
Chhibber, a 1994-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service from the Chhattisgarh cadre, is currently serving as Director General of the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) at NITI Aayog.
Speculation Over Permanent Appointment
In the initial days following the interim appointment, there was speculation that Nidhi Chhibber could eventually be regularised as the permanent CEO of the institution.
However, recent developments indicate that the government may be considering a different approach for filling the top position at the think tank.
According to sources familiar with the developments, the leadership is exploring potential candidates from among the current pool of Union Secretaries, suggesting that the next CEO may be selected from senior bureaucrats currently heading key ministries in the Government of India.
Focus on Serving Union Secretaries
Officials aware of the process indicate that the government is actively evaluating serving Secretaries for the position.
One of the leading contenders for the role is reportedly scheduled to retire later this year, raising the possibility that the officer could be moved to NITI Aayog before completing their tenure as Secretary in their present ministry.
Such a move would enable the government to place an experienced senior bureaucrat at the helm of the policy institution while ensuring strong coordination between ministries and the central government on strategic policy matters.
Strategic Significance of the Post
The position of CEO of NITI Aayog carries significant importance in India’s policy ecosystem. The role involves shaping national policy initiatives, monitoring the implementation of flagship government programmes, and facilitating coordination between the Centre and state governments on development strategies.
The selection of the next CEO will therefore be closely watched, as it will determine who will guide the strategic direction of the think tank in the coming years, particularly at a time when India is navigating complex economic, technological, and governance challenges.
For the moment, with Nidhi Chhibber holding the interim charge, attention in New Delhi remains focused on which senior bureaucrat will ultimately be chosen to take over the influential position on a regular basis.
