ACC Approves Appointment of Alok Tripathi and A. Amarnath to Senior Roles in Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointments of Shri Alok Tripathi, IRTS (1999), as Joint Secretary, and Shri A. Amarnath, IFS (2006), as OSD (JS level) in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Their tenures extend for five years and three years respectively, ensuring strengthened leadership in India’s energy sector.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved two significant appointments in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, strengthening leadership at the Joint Secretary level and ensuring continuity in policy and administrative oversight in one of India’s most vital economic sectors.

Appointment of Shri Alok Tripathi

The ACC has appointed Shri Alok Tripathi, an officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), 1999 batch, as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. His tenure will begin from the date of assumption of charge of the post and will continue for a period of five years, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Shri Tripathi succeeds Shri Asheesh Joshi, IAS (Uttarakhand cadre, 2006 batch), who previously held the position. With his extensive background in logistics, transport management, and infrastructure planning, Shri Tripathi is expected to bring valuable expertise to the petroleum sector, particularly in areas related to supply chain efficiency, energy distribution, and policy coordination.

Appointment of Shri A. Amarnath

In addition, the ACC has approved the appointment of Shri A. Amarnath, an officer of the Indian Forest Service (IFS), 2006 batch, as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Joint Secretary level in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. His tenure will also commence from the date of assumption of charge and will continue for a period of three years, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Shri Amarnath’s appointment reflects the government’s emphasis on bringing diverse expertise into the ministry. His background in environmental management and sustainable resource utilization is expected to complement the ministry’s efforts in balancing energy production with ecological considerations.

Significance of the Appointments

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s energy security, overseeing exploration, refining, distribution, and policy frameworks for oil and gas. The appointments of Shri Tripathi and Shri Amarnath are expected to:

Strengthen administrative leadership at the Joint Secretary level. Enhance coordination between energy policy, infrastructure, and sustainability.

Support the government’s broader agenda of energy efficiency, renewable integration, and environmental responsibility.

By inducting officers from diverse services — IRTS and IFS — the ministry gains a blend of expertise in transport, logistics, and environmental management, which is crucial for addressing the complex challenges of India’s energy sector.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet’s approval of Shri Alok Tripathi and Shri A. Amarnath’s appointments underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening leadership in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Their combined experience is expected to contribute significantly to India’s energy policy, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in the sector.
