Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty Gets One-Year Extension as Atomic Energy Secretary and AEC Chairman

In a significant decision concerning India’s atomic energy leadership, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension in service of Ajit Kumar Mohanty as Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

 Extension Approved Under Special Provision

As per the official order, Dr Mohanty has been granted a one-year extension in service with effect from April 11, 2026. The extension has been approved in relaxation of the provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d), which governs the retirement age of senior government officials.

Such extensions are typically granted in exceptional cases to ensure continuity in key scientific and strategic sectors.

 Key Roles and Responsibilities

In his dual role, Ajit Kumar Mohanty oversees:

India’s nuclear energy programme
Strategic atomic research and development
Policy formulation for atomic energy
Coordination of institutions under the Department of Atomic Energy

As Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, he also plays a central role in guiding India’s long-term nuclear strategy.
