Who Is IAS Mangesh Joshi? Maharashtra’s New Tourism Director Unveils Vision for Global Promotion and Sustainable Growth
In a significant administrative reshuffle, the Government of Maharashtra has appointed Mangesh Hiraman Joshi as the new Director of the Directorate of Tourism. He officially assumed charge in Mumbai on April 21, 2026, marking an important transition aimed at revitalizing and strengthening the state’s tourism sector.
Soon after taking charge, Joshi articulated a clear and forward-looking vision for Maharashtra’s tourism industry. He emphasized that the immediate focus will be on the effective implementation of existing tourism policies while simultaneously enhancing the state’s visibility on the global stage. “Our priority will be to position Maharashtra as a unique and safe destination on the global tourism map,” he stated, underlining the importance of strategic promotion and international outreach.
Joshi also stressed the need for sustainable tourism practices that not only attract visitors but also contribute to local economic development and employment generation. He highlighted that special emphasis will be placed on preserving and promoting the state’s rich and diverse attractions, including historic forts, an extensive coastline, eco-tourism destinations, and vibrant cultural heritage. These initiatives, he noted, will be supported by the development of modern infrastructure and improved amenities to enhance the overall tourist experience.
Before assuming his current role, Joshi served as Deputy Director General at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA) in Pune, which is the state’s premier institute for administrative training. During his tenure there, he played a key role in training civil servants, advancing administrative reforms, and contributing to strategic governance planning. His performance in this role earned him recognition for efficiency and a reform-oriented approach.
A 2015-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, Joshi was inducted into the Indian Administrative Service through promotion from the State Civil Service. Over the years, he has built a reputation for effective governance and hands-on administrative experience across various levels of government.
His earlier postings include serving as Additional Collector in Sindhudurg and Pune, where he handled district-level administration and public service delivery. He also worked as Deputy District Election Officer in Sindhudurg, where he was acknowledged for his effective management of electoral processes. In the early stages of his career, he served as a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), gaining valuable grassroots administrative experience.
Academically, Joshi holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), equipping him with a strong foundation in both financial and legal aspects of governance.
His appointment comes as part of a broader bureaucratic reshuffle in Maharashtra aimed at strengthening governance and bringing fresh energy to key sectors. He succeeds B. N. Patil as the Director of Tourism.
Under his leadership, the Maharashtra Tourism Department is expected to focus on global branding of iconic destinations such as Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, alongside expanding coastal and eco-tourism initiatives. Infrastructure modernization and employment generation through tourism are also likely to remain key priorities.
With a blend of administrative experience and a reform-driven outlook, Joshi’s leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in positioning Maharashtra as a major tourism hub both nationally and internationally.
