The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken stringent action against alleged administrative and police misconduct in West Bengal ahead of the crucial second phase of Assembly elections. In a decisive move, the Commission has ordered the suspension of five police officers posted in the Diamond Harbour police district, including a senior IPS officer, citing allegations of bias and failure to maintain electoral neutrality.
The कार्रवाई comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity in the state, with the Commission reiterating its commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. Officials emphasized that maintaining neutrality among law enforcement agencies is critical to upholding democratic integrity during elections.
Five Officers Suspended Over Alleged Bias
The suspended officers include Sandeep Garai, Additional Superintendent of Police, Diamond Harbour; Sajal Mandal; Mousam Chakraborty; Ajay Bag; and Shubhechha Bag. Alongside their suspension, departmental inquiries have been initiated to thoroughly investigate the allegations against them.
The Commission described the action as immediate and firm, reflecting its zero-tolerance approach toward any form of electoral malpractice or administrative bias.
Warning to Senior Officer
In addition to these suspensions, the ECI has issued a stern warning to Ishani Pal, Superintendent of Police, Diamond Harbour. She has been held accountable for allegedly failing to ensure discipline and neutrality among her subordinates during a sensitive electoral phase. The Commission underscored that senior अधिकारियों will be directly responsible for ensuring impartial conduct within their jurisdictions.
Action Based on CEO Report
The disciplinary measures were reportedly based on a detailed report submitted by the State Chief Electoral Officer on April 22. The report highlighted concerns regarding the conduct of certain police officials and pointed to possible lapses in maintaining a level playing field for all political parties.
This is not the first such action in the state. Earlier, the Officer-in-Charge of Hingalganj Police Station in North 24 Parganas was also suspended following allegations of collusion and bias during election-related duties.
Enhanced Monitoring Mechanism
To further strengthen oversight, the Election Commission has expanded its monitoring framework by deploying 10 additional police observers from states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. With this addition, the total number of police observers in West Bengal has increased from 84 to 94.
These observers have been tasked with closely monitoring law and order situations and ensuring strict compliance with election guidelines on the ground.
Strong Message on Electoral Integrity
The recent actions have generated significant reactions within administrative and political circles in West Bengal. Observers view these steps as part of the Commission’s broader strategy to enforce strict neutrality and discipline during one of the most closely watched electoral contests in the country.
By ordering suspensions, issuing warnings, and increasing surveillance, the Election Commission has sent a clear message that any form of bias, negligence, or misconduct will not be tolerated. The measures underline the Commission’s firm commitment to safeguarding transparency, fairness, and credibility in the electoral process.
As the state prepares for the next phase of polling, all eyes remain on how effectively these interventions ensure a level playing field and uphold democratic values.
