‘Skills Matter More Than Degrees,’ Says IAS Rahul Jain at Ratlam Student Session; Urges Youth to Focus on Employability

Emphasising the changing dynamics of education and employment in today’s competitive world, senior IAS officer Rahul Jain highlighted the growing importance of skill development over traditional academic qualifications. Speaking at a student guidance session in Ratlam, Jain urged young aspirants to focus on practical skills, adaptability, and continuous learning to secure meaningful career opportunities.

The session was organised by the Royal Institute of Management and Advanced Studies and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students eager to gain insights into career planning and professional growth. Rahul Jain, currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Finance Commission, addressed the gathering as the chief speaker.

During his address, Jain pointed out that while academic degrees remain relevant, they are no longer sufficient on their own in the modern job market. He stressed that industries today seek individuals who possess practical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and domain-specific skills. According to him, the rapid evolution of technology and changing industry requirements have made it essential for students to go beyond textbook learning.

“Skills have become more valuable than degrees in today’s environment,” Jain remarked, encouraging students to invest time in learning new competencies and upgrading themselves regularly. He advised them to stay curious, proactive, and open to learning, as these qualities significantly enhance employability.

The session also focused on various career pathways, including traditional employment, self-employment, and even the role of personal growth and spirituality in achieving long-term success. Jain explained that success is not limited to securing a job but also involves building a balanced and fulfilling life.

Providing practical guidance, he highlighted several government initiatives aimed at supporting youth in their career journeys. These included the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, the Chief Minister’s Seekho-Kamao (Learn and Earn) Scheme, the Vivekananda Career Guidance Scheme, the Corporate Mitra Portal, and the iGOT platform. He urged students to actively explore these opportunities, as they can provide valuable exposure, training, and financial support.

Jain also underlined the importance of discipline in the digital age. He cautioned students against excessive and unproductive use of technology, advising them instead to use digital platforms as tools for learning and self-improvement. According to him, maintaining digital discipline is crucial for staying focused and achieving long-term goals.
Highlighting the timeless value of hard work, Jain said that consistent effort and perseverance remain the foundation of success, regardless of changing trends. He encouraged students to stay committed to their goals and not be discouraged by challenges or setbacks.

The programme was presided over by Pramod Gugalia, Chairman of the Royal Group of Institutions, who introduced Jain and acknowledged his extensive administrative experience. A 2005-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Rahul Jain has held several key positions in his career, including District Collector of Gwalior, Rewa, and Narmadapuram, as well as Director of the Town and Country Planning Department. Notably, he is also a qualified Chartered Accountant, reflecting his strong academic and professional background.

Several dignitaries and social workers were present at the event, making it a comprehensive and enriching session for the students.
Overall, Jain’s address served as a powerful reminder that in today’s fast-changing world, success depends not just on degrees, but on the ability to learn, adapt, and continuously upgrade one’s skills.
