The Government of Telangana has appointed retired Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy as the State Security Advisor (SSA), bringing his distinguished three-decade policing career into an influential new chapter of public service. Reddy, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Telangana cadre, formally concluded his 32-year career in active service before being entrusted with this senior advisory role by the state administration.

Ceremonial Farewell at Police Academy

Ahead of his new appointment, Reddy was accorded a ceremonial farewell parade at the RBVRR Telangana Police Academy in Hyderabad, where colleagues, senior officials, and fellow officers gathered to pay tribute to his long and distinguished service. Reflecting on his journey during the farewell address, Reddy described his career as one shaped by immense challenges, continuous learning, and deeply memorable experiences — noting with pride the remarkable modernisation of the Telangana Police force over the decades and its evolution towards a more people-centric approach to law enforcement.
Three-Year Tenure as State Security Advisor

According to a government order issued on April 30, 2026, Reddy has been appointed as State Security Advisor for a period of three years from the date he assumes charge. In this capacity, he will advise the state government on a broad range of critical areas including policing and law and order, internal security, crime control, narcotics regulation, and road safety. He will hold a status equivalent to that of the Chief Secretary of the state and will receive a fixed monthly remuneration of ₹2.25 lakh.

Profile: Who Is B. Shivadhar Reddy?

A native of Tool-e-Kalan village in the Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Ranga Reddy district, Reddy is a law graduate who holds an LL.B. degree from Osmania University. He initially practised as an advocate before clearing the Civil Services Examination in 1994, after which he was allotted the IPS cadre and went on to build an exemplary career in policing across both undivided Andhra Pradesh and Telangana following its formation in 2014.

He began his career as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Visakhapatnam and subsequently served as Superintendent of Police across several districts including Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur. In Hyderabad, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police for both Traffic and South Zone, earning particular recognition for maintaining communal peace in the aftermath of the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast.

Reddy has held an impressive array of leadership positions over the years, including Commissioner of Police in Visakhapatnam, Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Chief of the Special Intelligence Branch, and head of the Personnel Wing. He notably became the first Chief of the Telangana Intelligence Department upon the state’s formation in 2014 and returned to that role again in 2023 before being elevated to the position of DGP in August 2024. He also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) in 2003, gaining valuable international exposure in peacekeeping operations.

Public-Centric Initiatives and Awards

Reddy is widely recognised for his proactive, public-facing policing initiatives. He launched the “Arrive Alive” road safety campaign in Visakhapatnam, introduced public complaint boxes across Telangana to enhance police-citizen engagement, and championed CCTV-based crime prevention in partnership with the hospitality sector as early as 2016. In June 2025, he was honoured with a Certificate of Excellence by the Minister of External Affairs for his contributions to the passport verification system through the VeriFast mobile app.

His outstanding service has been acknowledged through several prestigious national and international awards, including the Police Medal for Gallantry (2002), the United Nations Medal (2003), the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011), the Asadharan Aasuchana Kushalta Padak for intelligence excellence (2018), and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2020).

Following Reddy’s retirement, senior IPS officer C.V. Anand has assumed charge as the new chief of the Telangana Police force.
