Bihar Govt Transfers 16 IPS Officers in Major Police Reshuffle; Vikas Vaibhav Appointed IG Magadh, Sudhanshu Kumar Named ADG Law & Order
In a major overhaul of Bihar’s police administration, the state government has transferred 16 senior IPS officers across several critical departments and operational wings, signalling a significant restructuring of the state’s law enforcement leadership. The reshuffle, announced through an official notification issued by the Home Department on May 10, 2026, includes several strategically important appointments involving law and order, cyber security, technical services, criminal investigation, railways, training, and armed police units.
Among the most notable decisions in the reshuffle is the appointment of senior IPS officer Sudhanshu Kumar as Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order, one of the most crucial positions in the Bihar Police hierarchy. A 1996-batch IPS officer, Sudhanshu Kumar was previously serving as ADG of the State Crime Records Bureau and Modernisation. His transfer to the Law and Order wing comes at a time when the Bihar government is placing renewed emphasis on strengthening policing, internal security, and crime control across the state.
Another key development is the return of well-known IPS officer Vikas Vaibhav to an active field posting. Vikas Vaibhav has been appointed Inspector General (IG) of the Magadh Zone headquartered in Gaya after serving as Adviser to the Bihar State Planning Board. Widely recognized for his administrative leadership, public outreach initiatives, and popularity among youth, his posting to the strategically important Magadh region is being viewed as a significant move by the state government.
The reshuffle also includes a series of senior-level promotions and departmental realignments aimed at improving operational efficiency within the Bihar Police.
Senior IPS officer Paresh Saxena, a 1994-batch officer who was serving as ADG of Civil Defence, has now been promoted as Director General in the same department. Similarly, Nirmal Kumar Azad, also from the 1994 batch, has been appointed Director General (Training) after serving as ADG of Technical Services and Communication.
The Economic Offences Unit (EOU), which handles major financial and economic crime investigations, will now be headed by Amit Kumar Jain, a 1996-batch IPS officer. Another senior officer, Nayyar Hasnain Khan, has been appointed ADG of the Bihar Special Armed Police.
One of the most discussed transfers in the reshuffle involves IPS officer and author Amit Lodha. The 1998-batch officer has been shifted from the State Crime Records Bureau and Modernisation wing to head Bihar Police’s Wireless and Technical Services division as ADG. The assignment places him in charge of the police communication network and technological infrastructure, both of which are increasingly important in modern policing and surveillance operations.
The Cyber Crime-cum-Security Unit, another highly sensitive department amid growing cyber threats, will now be led by Amrit Raj, a 1998-batch IPS officer. Additionally, K S Anupam has been appointed ADG (Weaker Sections), CID, while Ranjit Kumar Mishra has been transferred from the Cyber Crime Unit to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Senior officer Sanjay Kumar has been posted as IG of the Special Branch.
The reshuffle also affects the Railway Police, provisioning units, welfare divisions, and modernisation wings. Kamal Kishore Singh has been appointed ADG (Railways), while Ajitabh Kumar will now head the State Crime Records Bureau and Modernisation. Sanjay Singh has been transferred to Budget, Appeals and Welfare, and P Kannan has been shifted as IG (Provisioning).
Officials said the latest restructuring reflects the Bihar government’s broader strategy to strengthen specialized policing units, improve coordination between operational departments, and enhance law-and-order management across the state. With experienced officers being assigned to critical positions, the reshuffle is expected to significantly influence Bihar’s policing and security administration in the coming months.
