IAS Officer Somesh Mishra Leads Road Safety and Environmental Awareness Campaigns in Narmadapuram
Under the leadership of Somesh Mishra, the Narmadapuram district administration has launched a series of community-focused initiatives aimed at promoting road safety, environmental awareness, and citizen participation. The campaigns, which combine public outreach with practical preventive measures, are gradually emerging as model civic movements focused on behavioral change and social responsibility.
Somesh Mishra, who is currently serving as the District Collector of Narmadapuram, has been actively encouraging public participation in campaigns designed to improve road discipline, reduce accidents, and promote environmental sensitivity among residents. The district administration’s approach emphasizes awareness and community involvement instead of relying solely on regulatory enforcement.
One of the most prominent initiatives launched under his leadership is Project Suraksha, a district-level road safety campaign focused on reducing accidents and saving lives through preventive action and public awareness. The initiative primarily addresses road accident risks associated with slow-moving and rural transport vehicles, which are often involved in serious accidents on highways and local roads, particularly during nighttime and foggy conditions.
As part of the campaign, the administration has made the installation of reflective radium strips on tractor-trolleys mandatory to improve visibility after dark. Authorities are also ensuring the use of Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signage on such vehicles to help prevent rear-end collisions, which are a common cause of fatal road accidents in rural areas.
In addition to vehicle safety measures, the district administration has intensified awareness drives promoting the use of helmets and seatbelts. Officials, volunteers, and local institutions are participating in outreach programs to educate citizens about traffic safety norms and responsible driving behavior.
The campaign also includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training sessions aimed at improving emergency response capabilities among citizens. By equipping people with basic life-saving skills, the administration hopes to increase survival chances for accident victims during the critical period before medical assistance arrives.
The slogan “Radium Lagayein, Jeevan Bachayein” has become a central message of Project Suraksha, helping transform the initiative from a routine administrative exercise into a broader public movement focused on saving lives through awareness and collective responsibility.
Alongside road safety efforts, the district administration has also launched the Neer Pakheru Abhiyan, an environmental awareness campaign aimed at protecting birds during the extreme summer heat. The initiative encourages citizens to place water bowls and grain containers in open and public spaces to help birds survive rising temperatures during the summer months.
Under the campaign, schools, government offices, social organizations, and local residents are being encouraged to participate actively by placing earthen pots and reusable containers filled with water and grains in accessible locations. The administration is also promoting the use of eco-friendly materials to support sustainability and environmental conservation.
The awareness drive carries the emotional public message: “Pyaase Panchiyon Ko Paani Pilayein, Aao Is Aadat Ko Sanskar Banayein,” encouraging compassion toward wildlife and fostering environmental sensitivity among citizens, especially children and students.
Officials say one of the strongest aspects of both campaigns is the emphasis on public participation. Rather than functioning solely as government-driven initiatives, the programs have evolved into community-led movements involving schools, local institutions, volunteers, and ordinary citizens.
This participatory approach has helped generate stronger public engagement and encouraged long-term behavioral change related to civic responsibility, road discipline, and environmental awareness.
