In a landmark moment for Indian agriculture, Andhra Pradesh’s ambitious natural farming movement has captured global attention after winning the prestigious Food Planet Prize 2026, widely recognized as the world’s largest environmental award focused on sustainable food systems.

The honour places Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) among the most influential agricultural initiatives in the world and highlights India’s growing leadership in climate-resilient, nature-friendly farming practices.

The award carries a grant of USD 1.5 million and was presented during a high-profile ceremony held in Båstad, Sweden, on June 2. Accepting the award on behalf of APCNF, retired IAS officer Vijay Kumar Thallam, who serves as Executive Vice Chairman of the initiative, described the recognition as a tribute to millions of farming families who have embraced sustainable agriculture.

He acknowledged the contributions of farmers, agricultural workers, scientists, and women-led community institutions that have played a central role in building the movement.

According to him, the award belongs not only to Andhra Pradesh but also to farming communities across India that are demonstrating a climate-friendly path forward for global agriculture.

Thallam emphasized that the recognition strengthens APCNF’s commitment to expanding natural farming across the state and reaching millions more farmers in the coming years.

Thallam also highlighted the role played by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in providing the policy support and long-term vision necessary for scaling up the initiative.

The state government’s backing helped transform what might have remained a localized experiment into one of the world’s largest agroecological programmes.

The leadership support, combined with community participation and scientific collaboration, created conditions that allowed APCNF to grow rapidly and sustainably.
