Tripura Police Organises Free Eye Screening Camp for Commercial Drivers to Boost Road Safety, Reduce Accident Risks

Agartala: In a significant step towards improving road safety and promoting preventive healthcare among drivers, the Tripura Police has organised a free eye screening camp for commercial vehicle drivers under its ongoing road safety campaign. The initiative aims to ensure that drivers operating buses, trucks, taxis and other commercial vehicles have proper vision, thereby helping reduce the risk of road accidents across the state.

The programme was conducted by the Traffic Department under Prayas, Tripura Police’s community policing initiative, reflecting the department’s growing emphasis on combining public welfare with road safety enforcement. Apart from free eye examinations, drivers requiring vision correction will also receive spectacles at no cost, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent them from accessing essential healthcare.

The initiative forms part of Tripura Police’s broader strategy to make roads safer by addressing factors that often go unnoticed but have a direct impact on accident prevention.

Road Safety Remains a Top Priority

Speaking at the programme, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, IPS, said that reducing road accidents continues to be one of the foremost priorities of Tripura Police.

He noted that the department has been implementing a comprehensive road safety strategy that combines awareness, enforcement, engineering improvements and emergency response, leading to encouraging results over the past year.

According to the DGP, the state’s efforts have already begun showing measurable success.

Road accident cases in Tripura have declined from around 578 in 2024 to 527 in 2025, indicating positive progress in improving road safety across the state.

He attributed this reduction to coordinated efforts involving multiple departments and stakeholders working together under a unified strategy.

Four Es Driving Tripura’s Road Safety Strategy

Highlighting the approach adopted by the police department, DGP Anurag said Tripura’s road safety programme is built around the internationally recognised concept of the Four Es, which include:

Education
Enforcement
Emergency Care
Engineering

According to him, meaningful improvements in road safety can only be achieved when all four components work together.

He said awareness campaigns educate road users about responsible driving, enforcement ensures compliance with traffic regulations, emergency care improves post-accident response, while engineering interventions make roads safer for motorists and pedestrians alike.

“The reduction in accidents has been possible because all stakeholders are working together on these four key areas. We have achieved encouraging results, and we will continue strengthening these efforts,” the DGP said.

Eye Health Linked Directly to Safer Driving

Tripura Police decided to organise the special health camp after recognising that many commercial drivers are unable to undergo regular eye examinations because of demanding work schedules and financial limitations.

Commercial drivers often spend long hours on the road, making good eyesight one of the most critical factors for safe driving. Even minor vision problems can significantly affect reaction time, judgment and the ability to identify road hazards, especially during night driving or adverse weather conditions.

By bringing healthcare services directly to drivers, the department aims to eliminate these barriers and encourage regular eye care.

Free Eye Examinations and Spectacles

During the camp, medical professionals conducted comprehensive eye examinations for commercial vehicle drivers.

Drivers diagnosed with vision-related issues were advised on the necessary corrective measures, while those requiring spectacles will receive them completely free of cost.

According to officials, the entire programme has been designed to ensure that no driver is deprived of essential eye care due to financial difficulties.

The cost of organising the camp, conducting eye examinations and providing spectacles is being borne jointly by the Traffic Office and the Prayas community policing programme.

Officials believe that better eyesight among drivers will directly contribute to safer roads by reducing accidents caused by poor visibility or undetected vision problems.

Community Policing Through Prayas

The programme also reflects Tripura Police’s continued emphasis on community policing.

Through Prayas, the department has been working to strengthen trust between the police and citizens by undertaking initiatives that directly benefit local communities.

Rather than limiting its role to law enforcement alone, the programme focuses on public welfare, awareness campaigns, health initiatives and community engagement.

The eye screening camp is another example of how policing and public service can work together to improve people’s quality of life while advancing larger public safety goals.

Commercial Drivers Welcome the Initiative

Commercial vehicle drivers who participated in the programme expressed appreciation for the initiative.

Many said they rarely find the time to visit hospitals or eye clinics because of long working hours and daily travel commitments.

One of the beneficiaries, Sukoon Mian, described the camp as an extremely useful initiative for commercial drivers.

He appreciated the Traffic Department and Tripura Police for organising free eye examinations and making healthcare services easily accessible to drivers.

Participants also noted that providing spectacles free of cost would help many drivers who might otherwise postpone treatment because of financial concerns.

Preventive Healthcare Supports Accident Prevention

Officials pointed out that road safety is influenced not only by traffic regulations and enforcement but also by the physical fitness of those operating vehicles.

Good eyesight plays a crucial role in enabling drivers to identify pedestrians, traffic signals, road signs, vehicles and unexpected obstacles in time to react safely.

By ensuring that commercial drivers undergo regular vision screening, the department hopes to minimise risks associated with poor eyesight and improve overall driving standards.

Preventive healthcare initiatives such as these are increasingly being recognised as an important component of modern road safety programmes.

Part of a Broader Road Safety Campaign

The eye screening camp forms part of Tripura Police’s larger campaign aimed at reducing road accidents through a combination of education, public awareness, strict enforcement and community participation.

The department has been consistently promoting responsible driving practices while encouraging greater cooperation between police, transport authorities, healthcare professionals and the general public.

Officials believe that sustainable improvements in road safety require continuous engagement with all stakeholders rather than relying solely on enforcement measures.

Commitment to Safer Roads

Tripura Police has reiterated its commitment to strengthening road safety across the state through innovative initiatives that combine public welfare with effective policing.

By addressing health-related challenges faced by commercial drivers, the department hopes to improve driving standards, reduce accident risks and create a safer road environment for all users.

As the state continues to build on its encouraging decline in accident figures, initiatives like free eye screening camps are expected to play an important role in supporting Tripura’s long-term road safety mission.

With preventive healthcare, community participation and technology-backed enforcement working together, Tripura Police aims to further reduce accidents while ensuring safer journeys for both drivers and the travelling public.
