Nitin Deep Blaggan to continue as Joint Director, CBI
Blaggan is a 2003-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Rajasthan cadre and has been serving with the CBI on central deputation. His continuation in the agency has now received the approval of the country’s top appointments panel for another year.
The latest order is significant because the approved extension takes his central deputation beyond the completion of seven years. The order itself describes the proposed continuation as being beyond October 8, 2026, into the eighth year.
The ACC has therefore exercised its authority to approve the continuation despite the tenure provisions contained in the IPS Tenure Policy. Rather than treating the policy as an automatic bar, the competent authority has approved the extension through a specific relaxation in this case.
The order does not indicate any change in his present designation. Blaggan will continue as Joint Director in the CBI, subject to the condition mentioned in the ACC approval that the extension will remain valid for one year or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
DoPT proposal receives ACC clearance
The latest development follows a proposal from the Department of Personnel and Training. The ACC order specifically refers to DoPT/AV Division Note No. 202/72/2024-AVD-II dated August 19, 2026, which formed the basis for consideration of the extension.
After examining the proposal, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the continuation of Blaggan’s deputation. The approval was communicated through an official order dated September 16, 2026.
The communication was addressed to the Department of Personnel and Training, with the Secretary of DoPT named as the recipient. Copies were also sent to the Prime Minister’s Office, the offices of the Home Minister and Minister of State for Personnel, the Cabinet Secretariat, the concerned DoPT division, the officer concerned and senior officials of the department.
This administrative chain is part of the established process through which senior-level central deputation and tenure extensions are processed and placed before the competent authority.
Extension takes deputation into eighth year
One of the most notable aspects of the decision is the length of Blaggan’s continued association with the CBI. The latest approval allows his deputation to continue for another full year beyond October 8, 2026.
That means the officer’s tenure with the central agency will enter its eighth year, subject to the condition that the extension remains in force only until further orders if an earlier decision is taken.
The ACC has also made it clear that the extension is being granted in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy. Such wording is important because central deputation of IPS officers is governed by prescribed tenure norms, and continuation beyond the applicable period requires approval under the relevant policy framework.
In Blaggan’s case, the competent authority has specifically approved the requested relaxation rather than allowing the policy provision to prevent his continuation.
Who is Nitin Deep Blaggan?
Nitin Deep Blaggan belongs to the 2003 batch of the Indian Police Service and is an officer of the Rajasthan cadre. Over the course of his career, he has held assignments in the police and central government system before taking up his current responsibility with the CBI.
His present position as Joint Director places him within the senior supervisory structure of the agency. Joint Directors in the CBI are involved in overseeing investigations and other responsibilities assigned to their respective branches or areas of operation.
The CBI handles a range of cases involving corruption, economic offences, serious crimes and matters entrusted to it by constitutional courts, state governments and the central government under applicable legal provisions. Officers at the Joint Director level consequently operate in a senior administrative and investigative capacity.

It is worth noting that the September 16 ACC communication is specifically an extension order. It does not announce a new posting, transfer or change in designation for Blaggan.
Instead, the government has approved the continuation of his existing deputation as Joint Director, CBI for another year beyond October 8, 2026. The operative period is clearly defined as one year or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The order also does not disclose the operational details or specific cases handled by the officer. Its purpose is administrative – to formally record the ACC’s approval for continuation of the officer’s central deputation.
For now, the decision means that Nitin Deep Blaggan will continue in his current CBI assignment after October 8, 2026, with the approved extension taking his deputation into its eighth year.
