West Bengal Deploys 12 IAS Officers to Fast-Track CAA Citizenship Process; Six Each Assigned to Nadia and North 24-Parganas

The West Bengal Government has deployed 12 IAS officers in Nadia and North 24-Parganas districts to accelerate the verification of citizenship applications submitted under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The officers will assist the district administrations in examining documents and expediting the processing of pending applications.

The deployment comes amid the state government’s renewed push to speed up the citizenship process, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari setting December 31 as the target for completing hearings and issuing citizenship certificates to eligible applicants.

According to a senior official at the state secretariat, Nabanna, the 12 officers have been temporarily attached to the two districts for a period of two months. They will assist the respective District Magistrates (DMs) in verifying documents submitted by applicants. Following the verification exercise, the DMs will conduct hearings and facilitate the issuance of citizenship certificates to those found eligible under the law.

12 IAS Officers Assigned to Two Districts

The officers selected for the assignment are currently serving as Assistant Magistrates and Assistant Collectors in different parts of West Bengal. Six officers have been assigned to each district.

North 24-Parganas:

* Tejaswa
* Swami Sunil Ramling
* Rajat Yadav
Nadia:
* Ritika Rath
* Chougule Aditi Sanjay

Their temporary deployment is intended to strengthen the administrative capacity of the two districts and ensure that document verification and related proceedings are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Chief Minister Sets December 31 Target for Citizenship Certificates

The administrative exercise follows Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s recent announcement at Thakurnagar, where he highlighted the pace of citizenship approvals under the CAA in West Bengal.

According to the Chief Minister, approximately 2.5 lakh applicants have sought citizenship under the Act, but only around 25,000 had received citizenship certificates so far.

Adhikari has directed the administration to accelerate the process, expressing the government’s intention to complete the necessary verification and hearings and issue citizenship certificates to eligible applicants by December 31.

The deployment of additional IAS officers is expected to help the district administrations address pending applications, streamline document scrutiny and improve coordination between the departments involved in the process.

Civil Society Members Raise Concerns Over Attacks on Christians

In a separate development, prominent members of civil society, including retired bureaucrats, journalists and human rights activists, have expressed concern over reports of attacks on Christian minorities in West Bengal since May.

The group questioned the state of constitutional protections and the safety of minority communities, raising concerns about the reported incidents and their implications for fundamental rights.

Former Rajya Sabha member and former Prasar Bharati chairman Jawhar Sircar was among those who addressed the gathering. He alleged that Christians were facing oppression on an alarming scale and questioned the circumstances behind the reported attacks.

The participants also criticised the BJP-led state government and called for stronger safeguards to protect the constitutional rights, security and dignity of minority communities.

Their concerns have brought renewed attention to the broader debate surrounding minority protection, religious freedom and the responsibility of the state administration to uphold constitutional guarantees.

Buxa Tigress BT1 Safely Captured After Travelling Over 100 Km into Assam

Meanwhile, a significant wildlife conservation operation involving West Bengal and Assam concluded successfully with the safe capture of a tigress from the Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar district.

Identified as BT1, the tigress had been released into the wild at Buxa Tiger Reserve on October 2. It subsequently travelled more than 100 kilometres from its release location, crossing into Assam and eventually reaching Raimona National Park in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

After spending nearly two weeks in the national park, the tigress was tranquilised and safely captured on Tuesday through a coordinated operation involving forest officials from West Bengal and the Bodoland Territorial Region, local authorities and members of nearby communities. Following its capture, the tigress was brought back to the BTR.

The successful operation highlighted the importance of coordination between forest departments across state boundaries, particularly in cases involving the movement of large wildlife beyond designated habitats. It also underscored the challenges associated with monitoring and managing animals following their release into the wild.

The three developments highlight different aspects of governance and administration in eastern India, ranging from the implementation of citizenship-related procedures and concerns over minority protection to inter-state cooperation in wildlife conservation.
