The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has approved the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) applications of four senior officers from the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes). The decision was conveyed through an official notification and is part of routine administrative processes within the department.

Officers Who Have Opted for VRS

Dr. J. Michael Kennedy (1993 batch) – Principal Additional Director General, noted for his leadership in investigations and intelligence operations.

Ms. Sudha Koka (1995 batch) – Principal Additional Director General, recognized for her contributions to policy formulation and administrative leadership.

Shaik Khader Rahman (1992 batch) – Chief Commissioner, the seniormost among the four, with decades of experience in customs enforcement and revenue administration.

Mrinal Chatterjee (2018 batch) – Deputy Director, one of the youngest officers to take voluntary retirement from the cadre.

Context and Implications

Although the CBIC has not provided specific reasons for these retirements, such decisions typically stem from a mix of personal and professional considerations. The acceptance of VRS applications is a routine exercise that also facilitates cadre restructuring, promotions, and mid-career lateral movements.

With these departures, the CBIC is expected to initiate a series of internal postings and fresh appointments in the coming weeks to ensure continuity in key functions.
