S.K. Jha Gets Extension as Joint Secretary in Revenue Department Until October 2027

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Revenue for the extension of the tenure of Shri S.K. Jha, CSS, who is serving as Joint Secretary in the department. Under the decision, Jha will continue in the post beyond his earlier tenure until the date of his superannuation, which is October 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The decision was formally issued by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Department of Personnel and Training on October 6, 2026. The order follows a Department of Revenue communication dated August 21, 2026, and provides continuity in the senior administrative position held by Jha within the Union government’s revenue administration.

ACC Approves Tenure Extension for S.K. Jha

According to the official order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the Department of Revenue’s proposal concerning the extension of S.K. Jha’s tenure. Jha is a CSS officer and currently holds the position of Joint Secretary, Department of Revenue.

The extension has been approved beyond August 26, 2026, which was the earlier end date referred to in the government communication. His tenure will now continue until October 31, 2027, when he is scheduled to superannuate, unless the government issues another order before that date.

The decision effectively ensures that Jha can continue in his present Joint Secretary-level assignment for the period leading up to his retirement. It also provides continuity to the Department of Revenue by allowing the existing officer to remain in the post rather than requiring an immediate change in its senior administrative structure.

Extension Till Date of Superannuation

One of the important aspects of the order is that the tenure extension has been linked directly to Jha’s date of superannuation. The ACC has approved his continuation up to October 31, 2027, which is identified as the date of his retirement from government service.

The order also contains the standard condition “or until further orders, whichever is earlier.” This means that although the approved tenure extends up to his superannuation date, the government can issue a subsequent order that changes or ends the arrangement before October 31, 2027.

As things stand under the latest order, however, Jha is authorised to continue as Joint Secretary in the Department of Revenue through October 31, 2027.

Department of Revenue Sought the Extension

The extension proposal originated from the Department of Revenue, which sent a formal communication to the competent authorities seeking continuation of Jha’s tenure. The reference in the ACC order is to a Department of Revenue DO letter dated August 21, 2026, bearing reference number A-19011/12/2021-Ad.I.

The proposal was subsequently considered by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Following its consideration, the ACC approved the extension and communicated the decision through the Department of Personnel and Training.

The order was issued from New Delhi on October 6, 2026, and carries the reference number 27/62/2026-EO(SM-I).

S.K. Jha Continues as Joint Secretary

Jha’s continuation is significant because the position of Joint Secretary is part of the senior administrative structure of the Department of Revenue. The department functions under the Ministry of Finance and deals with a wide range of matters concerning taxation, revenue administration and related financial policies of the Union government.

A Joint Secretary in such a department operates at an important level of the central administrative system. The position can involve policy coordination, supervision of assigned divisions, implementation of government decisions and interaction with various departments and agencies.

The latest order does not indicate any change in Jha’s designation or department. Instead, it specifically extends his existing tenure as Joint Secretary, allowing him to continue in the same role until his superannuation or until another government order is issued.

CSS Officer to Continue in Senior Administrative Role

S.K. Jha belongs to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). Officers of the CSS form an important part of the administrative machinery of the Government of India and serve in various ministries and departments at different levels of responsibility.

Jha’s present assignment as Joint Secretary places him in a senior position within the Department of Revenue. His tenure extension will allow him to continue handling his existing responsibilities for an additional period.

The ACC approval also reflects the government’s decision to retain continuity in the position rather than bring the existing tenure to an end after August 26, 2026. The extension has now been approved through the date of superannuation, subject to the “until further orders” provision.

Department of Revenue Leadership to Remain Unchanged

The decision means that there will be no immediate change in the Joint Secretary position currently held by Jha. He will continue working with the Department of Revenue as the department carries forward its ongoing administrative and policy responsibilities.

The Revenue Department deals with several important areas of government functioning, including matters relating to direct and indirect taxation, customs, revenue collection and associated administrative frameworks. Its work involves coordination with multiple government agencies and departments.

Continuity at the Joint Secretary level can therefore help maintain consistency in ongoing administrative work. Jha’s extension allows him to remain in the role while the department continues its existing programmes and responsibilities.

Order Circulated to Senior Government Offices

The ACC order has been formally addressed to the Department of Revenue, with Arvind Shrivastava, Secretary, named as the recipient. Copies have also been sent to several senior government offices and officials.

The distribution includes the Prime Minister’s Office, the office of the Home Minister and the office of the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. The Cabinet Secretariat has also been included, with Joint Secretary Kavita Singh named in the circulation.

A copy has also been sent to the Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training, as well as the officer concerned. The relevant offices of the Secretary, Personnel, the Establishment Officer and the concerned administrative officials have also been included.

The Senior Technical Director, National Informatics Centre, DoPT, and the relevant guard file have also been marked in the official communication.

What the Extension Means for S.K. Jha

For Jha, the ACC decision provides clarity regarding his tenure as Joint Secretary following the expiry of the earlier period on August 26, 2026. He will now continue in the position until his scheduled superannuation on October 31, 2027, unless a subsequent order changes the arrangement.

The extension covers a little more than one year beyond the date referred to as the earlier tenure end date. It also means that Jha will remain part of the Department of Revenue’s senior administrative setup during the period leading up to his retirement.

The order does not announce a new posting, transfer or change of department. It is specifically a tenure extension, allowing the CSS officer to remain in his current Joint Secretary position.

Formal ACC Approval Issued on October 6

The decision was formally communicated on October 6, 2026, through the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Department of Personnel and Training. The order confirms that the competent authority has approved the proposal submitted by the Department of Revenue.

With the latest approval, S.K. Jha, CSS, will continue as Joint Secretary in the Department of Revenue until October 31, 2027, which is his date of superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The decision provides continuity in the department’s senior administrative structure and keeps Jha in his existing role for the remainder of his approved tenure. Any change before the superannuation date would require a subsequent order from the competent authority.
