ACC Grants Ex Post Facto Approval for Temporary Upgradation of CISF DIG Post for IPS Officer Sonia Narang
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal for the ex post facto temporary upgradation of a senior post in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), enabling Karnataka cadre IPS officer Sonia Narang to serve at the rank of Inspector General (IG) for a brief period during her Central deputation.
The decision relates to the temporary elevation of one post from the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to Inspector General (IG) as a measure personal to the officer. The approval regularises the arrangement retrospectively and reflects the Centre’s administrative mechanism for addressing seniority and posting requirements during appointments to Central Armed Police Forces.
The order has been issued following the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which is the apex authority responsible for appointments to several senior positions in the Government of India.

According to the official order, the Ministry of Home Affairs had proposed the temporary upgradation of one post of Deputy Inspector General (Level-13A in the Pay Matrix) to the level of Inspector General (Level-14 in the Pay Matrix) within the Central Industrial Security Force.
The ACC has now granted ex post facto approval for the proposal. In administrative terms, ex post facto approval means that the competent authority has formally approved a decision after it had already taken effect, thereby regularising the arrangement.
The upgraded post remained valid from September 15, 2025, the date on which the officer assumed charge, until October 3, 2025. Officials noted that the upgradation was approved strictly as a measure personal to the officer, meaning the enhancement applied only for the specific tenure of the concerned officer and did not permanently alter the sanctioned strength or hierarchy of CISF.
Benefit Extended to IPS Officer Sonia Narang
The temporary upgradation benefited Ms. Sonia Narang, an IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre (2002 batch). She assumed charge on September 15, 2025, and the upgraded post remained effective until October 3, 2025.
Since the arrangement was personal to the officer, the post automatically reverted to its original status after the specified period ended. Such temporary upgradations are occasionally approved to address administrative requirements, maintain parity in senior-level appointments or facilitate the smooth placement of officers during Central deputation.
