Haryana Government Considers 6-Month Extension for Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi

The Haryana government is set to recommend a six-month extension in service for Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre, whose retirement is scheduled for June 30, 2025. If approved by the Centre, Mr. Rastogi would continue to lead the state’s bureaucracy until the end of the year.

Proposal Awaiting Central Approval

Mr. Rastogi was appointed as Chief Secretary in February 2025, and the state government is preparing to send a formal proposal for his extension to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). As per the All India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, a Chief Secretary can be granted an extension of up to six months, subject to central approval.

Who Is Anurag Rastogi?

Born on June 21, 1965, in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Anurag Rastogi has been known for his academic excellence since his early years. Driven by a strong desire to join the civil services, he began preparing for the UPSC examination during his graduation. His determination bore fruit when he cleared the Civil Services Examination in 1989, becoming an IAS officer and realizing his lifelong dream.

An Accomplished Bureaucrat

With a distinguished administrative career spanning over three decades, Mr. Rastogi has served in various key departments, especially in areas related to finance, governance, and policy formulation. He currently also holds charge as Secretary-in-Charge of General Administration, Human Resources, Personnel and Training, Parliamentary Affairs, Vigilance, and Planning Coordination.

He began his career as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Narnaul on August 17, 1992, followed by postings in Narwana (1993–94) and roles as Additional Deputy Commissioner (1994–97) of Kaithal and CEO of DRDA. In 1996, he was also given additional charge as Deputy Commissioner of Rohtak.

Mr. Rastogi’s extensive experience and deep understanding of state-level governance are seen as vital assets, particularly in navigating complex administrative challenges and shaping long-term policy.

If the proposed extension goes through, Mr. Rastogi will remain at the administrative helm of Haryana during a crucial period of governance and implementation.
