1991-Batch Officer Gets Three-Month Extension Despite Availability of Serving Officers

In a move that has generated considerable administrative discussion, the Haryana government has re-employed retired IPS officer Alok Kumar Roy (1991 batch) as Director General of Prisons for a period of three months, beginning October 1, 2025, just a day after his superannuation.

The appointment has been made under Rule 9(1) of the IPS Cadre Rules, 1954, which permits the temporary re-employment of a retired officer in a cadre post for a maximum of three months, provided no suitable serving officer is deemed available for the role.

Tenure Until December 31, 2025

Mr. Roy, who served as DG Prisons until his retirement on September 30, 2025, was re-appointed by the Home Department through an order issued the following day. According to the notification, the detailed terms and conditions of his re-employment will be issued separately.

He will continue as DG Prisons for 92 days, from October 1 to December 31, 2025.
