DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Bhatia Reviews Major Infrastructure Projects in Northeast and Jharkhand; Kohima Bypass Among Key Highlights

 

Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and a 1993-batch IAS officer, chaired a high-level review meeting on June 24, 2025, to assess and expedite infrastructure projects in Jharkhand, Sikkim, Nagaland, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Organized by the Project Monitoring Group (PMG), the meeting aimed to fast-track resolution of bottlenecks through coordinated efforts involving central ministries, state governments, and project developers.

Scope of Review: 31 Issues Across 19 Projects

A total of 31 issues affecting 19 projects were reviewed during the session:

Jharkhand: 18 issues across 11 projects, with a combined value exceeding ₹34,213 crore

Sikkim: 2 issues linked to 2 projects worth ₹943.04 crore

Nagaland: 3 issues involving 2 projects, totaling ₹544.65 crore

Assam: 1 issue concerning a project worth ₹6,700 crore

Arunachal Pradesh: 7 issues in 3 projects, including a ₹1,000 crore private sector initiative; total value ₹33,469 crore

Key Projects Discussed

Patratu Thermal Power Station Expansion (Phase-I), Jharkhand: A 2,400 MW project by NTPC/PUVNL, deploying supercritical technology to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. Water will be sourced from the Nalkari Dam, and coal from NTPC’s captive blocks.

Dibang Hydropower Project, Arunachal Pradesh: Developed by NHPC, this 2,880 MW project includes India’s tallest dam. It aims to generate over 11,223 million units of clean energy annually, offer 13% free power to the state, aid in flood control, and support India’s Net Zero goals. Completion is expected by February 2032.

Kohima Bypass Road Project, Nagaland: Executed by NHIDCL under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the project is designed to ease congestion in Kohima, strengthen inter-state connectivity, and promote tourism and trade.

GeoEnpro Petroleum Project, Arunachal Pradesh: A ₹1,000 crore private investment, this project was also reviewed. Secretary Bhatia urged the state to swiftly address pending issues and extend full cooperation to support the venture. He emphasized improving the Ease of Doing Business to encourage private sector participation.

Focus on Institutional Strengthening and Policy Support

Secretary Bhatia reiterated DPIIT’s commitment to enhancing the institutional framework for project monitoring. He called on both central and state agencies to adopt a proactive, collaborative approach, and encouraged private stakeholders to make full use of the PMG portal (https://pmg.dpiit.gov.in) for real-time project tracking and timely issue resolution.

This review underscores the central government’s continued focus on accelerating infrastructure development, promoting regional growth, and boosting investor confidence across the country.
