A 1993-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Mukherjee brings extensive experience in both state and central government administration to her new assignment. Before taking charge in the Ministry of Education, she was serving as Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
Her appointment places her at the helm of the Department of Higher Education, which oversees major areas of the country’s higher education ecosystem, including policy formulation, coordination with higher educational institutions and implementation of central government initiatives in the sector.
From Corporate Affairs to Higher Education
Mukherjee’s move from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to the Ministry of Education represents a significant change in her administrative responsibilities. At the Corporate Affairs Ministry, she was involved in matters relating to India’s corporate regulatory and governance framework.
With her new assignment, she will now oversee a department dealing with one of the country’s most important public-policy areas – higher education.
