Ms. Vandana Rao, a 2015-batch IAS officer from the AGMUT cadre, has been appointed as the new Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of West Delhi. Prior to this, she served as Deputy Commissioner in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
A Promising Journey in Public Service
Born on September 2, 1990, in Kangan Heri village, Najafgarh (Delhi), Ms. Rao holds a B.Tech degree in Computer Science from Kurukshetra University and a Master’s in Personnel Management. After initially working in the corporate sector, she decided to pursue a career in civil services. In her third attempt, she cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2015, securing an impressive All India Rank of 4.
Since joining the IAS, Ms. Rao has served in several key administrative roles. She began her career as the Deputy Commissioner of Karol Bagh Zone, later moving to the City-SP Zone under MCD. Her efforts in urban management, especially in tackling Delhi’s plastic waste problem, have earned her widespread appreciation.
Beyond the Bureaucracy
In addition to her government responsibilities, Ms. Rao is a member of the advisory board of the Adhyayan Quality Education Foundation, where she supports educational reforms and initiatives across India.
She is married to Mr. Hemant Kumar, a 2013-batch IAS officer of the Nagaland cadre.
