Senior IPS officer Rithwik Rudra, a seasoned intelligence operative from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the post of Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), as the tenure of incumbent chief Tapan Deka is set to conclude on June 30, 2026.
With the Centre expected to take a final decision on the next IB chief in the coming weeks, discussions within the security establishment have intensified regarding the possible successors to one of India’s most crucial intelligence positions. Sources familiar with the developments indicate that Rithwik Rudra’s name is among the strongest under consideration due to his extensive experience in intelligence operations and internal security matters.
Currently serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Rudra is regarded within security and policing circles as a highly experienced officer with deep operational expertise and strategic understanding of national security challenges.
Tapan Deka’s Extended Tenure Nearing End
The current IB Director, IPS officer Tapan Deka, was originally appointed to the post in 2022 for a fixed tenure of two years. Following the completion of his initial term, the government granted him a one-year extension in 2024, extending his tenure till 2025.
Subsequently, he received another extension, allowing him to continue in office till June 30, 2026. However, sources suggest that the government is unlikely to grant a further extension beyond this date, paving the way for the appointment of a new intelligence chief.
As a result, attention has now shifted to senior officers currently serving in key intelligence roles, with Rithwik Rudra emerging as one of the most prominent names in the race.
Extensive Career in Intelligence Bureau
Rithwik Rudra belongs to the 1993 batch of the Indian Police Service and is an officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. Over the years, he has spent a major portion of his professional career within the Intelligence Bureau, steadily rising through the ranks and handling several sensitive assignments.
Before becoming Special Director in September 2024, Rudra served in important positions including Additional Director and Joint Director within the IB. His long association with the organisation is considered one of his biggest strengths in the race for the top post.

Rithwik Rudra has already been empanelled to hold the rank of Director General in the Government of India. In addition, he has also received a proforma promotion to the rank of Director General of Police in his parent Himachal Pradesh cadre.

Born in Delhi, which is also considered his home state, Rithwik Rudra completed his higher education before entering the civil services. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree.
He joined the Indian Police Service as a direct recruit through the UPSC Civil Services Examination and formally entered service on September 4, 1994.

Khakhran is also currently serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau and is considered a senior and experienced intelligence officer. Her name is believed to be among the prominent contenders being evaluated for the top position.

The appointment process for the next IB Director comes at a time when another major leadership selection is also underway in India’s security establishment.
A high-level committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Chief Justice nominee Justice Surya Kant is expected to meet soon to finalise the appointment of the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
