Justice Bagchi Sworn in as Supreme Court Judge, may become CJI in 2031

Justice Bagchi has sworn in as SC Judge, he is likely to become Chief Justice of India in the year 2031.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi took the oath as a Supreme Court judge on March 17, 2025, with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Sanjiv Khanna administering the oath of office.

His appointment fills one of the two vacancies in the Supreme Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges. Justice Bagchi is expected to assume the role of Chief Justice of India in May 2031 for a tenure of just over four months before retiring on October 2, 2031. His elevation was approved by the Union government on March 6, 2025, following the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation.
