Congress MLA A.S. Ponnanna Appointed Political Secretary to Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar
The Karnataka government has appointed Congress MLA A.S. Ponnanna as Political Secretary to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, giving him the status and rank of a Cabinet Minister.
The appointment was announced through an official government notification and will take effect immediately. Ponnanna, who represents the Virajpet Assembly constituency, will continue in the position until further orders.
The appointment comes amid considerable political interest around Ponnanna’s role within the Congress party. Interestingly, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had earlier named him as the party’s nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Ponnanna Gets Cabinet Minister Status
According to the government notification, A.S. Ponnanna, Member of the Legislative Assembly from Virajpet, has been appointed Political Secretary to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar with immediate effect. The notification also states that he will be accorded the status of a Cabinet Minister.
The position is politically significant as the Political Secretary works closely with the Chief Minister and is expected to assist with political coordination, party-related matters and communication between the government and various political stakeholders. Ponnanna’s appointment therefore gives him a prominent role within the Chief Minister’s political establishment.
Earlier Named for Deputy Speaker’s Post
The appointment is particularly noteworthy because Ponnanna’s name had recently emerged in connection with another important constitutional position in the Karnataka Assembly. The Congress high command had earlier selected him as the party’s nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
A letter sent by the Congress high command to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on August 3, containing the list of ministers who were scheduled to take oath that day, had also mentioned Ponnanna’s name as the party’s nominee for the Deputy Speaker’s position. His appointment as Political Secretary now marks a change in his immediate political role.
Ponnanna Had Been Seeking a Ministerial Position
Ponnanna had reportedly been among the Congress MLAs hoping to receive a ministerial berth. However, he was not inducted into the Karnataka Cabinet during the recent expansion. The state Cabinet was expanded last week, but Ponnanna did not find a place among the ministers.
His subsequent appointment as Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, with Cabinet Minister status, gives him a significant government position despite not being inducted into the Council of Ministers. The move is therefore being viewed as an important political adjustment within the ruling Congress establishment.
Former Legal Adviser to Siddaramaiah
An advocate by profession, Ponnanna has previously held an important role in the Karnataka government. He served as legal adviser to then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during Siddaramaiah’s earlier tenure as Chief Minister. His legal background and experience in government affairs have been among the notable aspects of his political career.
As Political Secretary to Shivakumar, Ponnanna is now expected to bring his legal and political experience to the Chief Minister’s office while handling responsibilities assigned to him by the government.
A Key Role Around the Chief Minister
The appointment of a political secretary with Cabinet Minister status gives Ponnanna a potentially influential position in Karnataka’s political and administrative setup. The role can involve coordinating political matters, maintaining communication with legislators and party leaders, and assisting the Chief Minister in dealing with political issues that arise within the government and the ruling party.
Ponnanna’s appointment also comes at a politically important time for the Karnataka Congress government, particularly as the party continues to manage internal political equations and balance the expectations of its legislators.
For Ponnanna, the new assignment provides a prominent position close to the Chief Minister after he was left out of the recent Cabinet expansion. The government order makes it clear that his appointment is effective immediately and will remain in force until further orders.
