Karnataka DGP Dr. Alok Mohan to Retire on May 21; Interim Appointment Likely

Dr. Alok Mohan, a 1987-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre and the current Director General and Head of Police Force, is set to retire on May 21, 2025. He took over the top post on May 21, 2023, succeeding Mr. Praveen Sood (1986-batch IPS), who was appointed as CBI Director.

With Dr. Mohan’s retirement around the corner, the Government of Karnataka is expected to put in place a temporary or ad hoc arrangement for the position of State DGP. This interim measure is likely, given the time the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) typically requires to evaluate and recommend a final panel of eligible officers.
Shortlisted Officers for DGP Position

According to sources, the state government has already forwarded a list of senior IPS officers to the UPSC for consideration. The officers under review include:

Mr. Prashant Kumar Thakur (1992 batch) – Director General, Fire and Emergency Services

Mr. M Abdullah Saleem (1993 batch) – Director General, Criminal Investigation Department (CID)

Mr. K Ramachandra Rao (1993 batch) – CMD, Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation

Mr. Pronab Mohanty (1994 batch) – Director General, Internal Security Division (ISD) and Cyber Command

All four officers are deemed eligible and possess 2–3 years of remaining service, ensuring stability and continuity in the leadership of the state’s police department.

The UPSC is currently reviewing their profiles, and the final appointment will be based on the Commission’s recommendation.
