In a major bureaucratic reshuffle that has drawn attention from both political and administrative circles, senior IAS officer Kaushal Raj Sharma has been deputed to Delhi under the AGMUT cadre for a period of three years. The 2006-batch officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, who recently took over as Secretary to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is expected to assume a high-profile role in the central government.

Mr Sharma is widely regarded for his disciplined work ethic and strong administrative skills. He previously served as District Magistrate and Divisional Commissioner of Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His tenure there, which lasted from 2019 to April 2025, is considered one of the longest and most impactful in the city’s recent history. During this time, he led several landmark initiatives, including the execution of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, and played a central role in shaping Varanasi’s modern transformation.

His recent transfer to Lucknow just two weeks ago had already generated buzz, as he was appointed Secretary to the CM. Now, his sudden move to Delhi has intensified speculation that he may be tapped for a critical role in national policymaking or oversight of flagship government schemes.

Strong Links with the PMO

Mr Sharma’s administrative trajectory has often aligned with national priorities. Shortly after the BJP took power in Uttar Pradesh, he was chosen to helm Varanasi’s administration, a move seen as a nod from the highest echelons of the government. His importance was underscored in 2022, when a late-night order reversed his planned transfer to Prayagraj, allowing him to continue as Varanasi’s District Magistrate—officially in the interest of public service.

Key Force Behind Varanasi’s Urban Overhaul

Under Sharma’s leadership, Varanasi saw sweeping changes. From implementing major infrastructure upgrades to managing the COVID-19 crisis, his tenure drew praise across political divides. One of his most notable achievements was persuading over 300 families to relocate for the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project, doing so with minimal resistance—an example often cited as a benchmark in conflict-free governance.

With his central deputation now confirmed, all eyes are on the role he will take on next—one that could place him at the heart of India’s national development agenda.
