Kerala IAS Officer N Prasanth Suspended for Eighth Time Over Media Comments Against Government
In yet another disciplinary action, the Kerala government has suspended IAS officer N Prasanth of the 2007 batch, marking the eighth time he has faced suspension since joining service. The latest order extends his suspension period, citing repeated instances of unauthorised media comments and public appearances critical of the state administration.
Fresh Action Over Media Statements
According to official sources, disciplinary proceedings were initiated after Prasanth allegedly made remarks against the government in news reports, interviews, video content, online publications, and social media posts. In recent days, he is said to have appeared on television chat shows and YouTube channels, where his comments drew sharp criticism from the administration.
The government viewed these actions as violations of service conduct rules, prompting the continuation of his suspension.
Suspension Timeline and Background
Prasanth was first suspended in 2022 after a Facebook post in which he criticised bureaucratic practices and government policies. That initial action set off a prolonged series of disciplinary measures.
On November 11, 2024, he was suspended again for levelling serious allegations against senior bureaucrats, including Jayathilak (then Additional Chief Secretary, now Chief Secretary) and Sarada Muraleedharan. Since then, his suspension has been extended multiple times.
The suspension period had already been extended until November 2025 and later to May 6, 2026. With just days remaining before expiry, the government issued a fresh order continuing his suspension, citing his recent public statements.
Pattern of Disciplinary Action
With the latest order, N Prasanth has now faced eight separate instances of disciplinary action, making his case one of the most prolonged and contentious involving a serving IAS officer in Kerala.
The repeated suspensions highlight an ongoing standoff between the officer and the state administration over issues of conduct, public communication, and adherence to service rules.
Government’s Stand
Officials have maintained that Prasanth’s repeated public remarks against the government amount to misconduct and undermine administrative discipline. The government has not disclosed the exact duration of the latest suspension but confirmed that disciplinary proceedings are ongoing.
Broader Implications
The case has drawn significant attention within bureaucratic circles, both for its unusual length and recurring nature. It underscores the challenges of balancing freedom of expression with service conduct rules in the civil services.
For N Prasanth, the continuation of suspension represents a major setback in his career trajectory. For the Kerala government, the move signals its intent to enforce strict discipline and accountability among officers, particularly in matters involving public communication and criticism of governance.
