Centre Extends Tenures of Key Bureaucrats, Announces Strategic Appointments Across Ministries and Departments
The Central Government has approved a series of important bureaucratic appointments and tenure extensions. IAS officer Sheetal Verma, AYUSH Secretary Rajesh Kotecha, MNRE Joint Secretary Naga Subramanyam, and CVC Director Ajai Kumar Verma received extensions, while Anand Bantia and Mamta were given new assignments in key ministries.
In a fresh round of administrative decisions, the Central Government has approved several important appointments, deputation changes, and tenure extensions involving senior officers serving across a range of ministries and departments. The latest orders are aimed at ensuring continuity in governance, maintaining policy momentum, and retaining experienced officers in critical positions linked to census operations, renewable energy, AYUSH, vigilance administration, corporate affairs, and industrial policy.
The decisions affect officers from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), Indian Economic Service (IES), Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE), and other central services.
The notifications indicate the government’s preference for continuity in sectors where long-term policy implementation and institutional memory are considered vital.
Sheetal Verma to Continue in Census Operations Role Till 2027
One of the most significant decisions concerns senior IAS officer Sheetal Verma, who will continue serving as Director of Census Operations (DCO) and Director of Citizen Registration (DCR) in Uttar Pradesh.
A 2007-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Verma has been granted a one-year extension, allowing her to remain in the post until June 30, 2027.
The extension comes at a crucial time as the country continues preparations related to census administration and citizen registration activities. Uttar Pradesh, being India’s most populous state, plays a particularly important role in these exercises, making continuity in leadership a key administrative consideration.
Officials believe that retaining experienced officers in census-related assignments helps ensure smoother implementation of large-scale data collection and population management exercises.
AYUSH Secretary Rajesh Kotecha Gets Another Year
The government has also extended the tenure of Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary in the Ministry of AYUSH.
Under the latest order, Kotecha will continue in office for another year beyond his existing tenure, serving until June 28, 2027.
Over the years, Kotecha has been one of the key faces behind the Centre’s efforts to promote traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy.
His tenure has coincided with an increasing global focus on holistic healthcare and traditional wellness systems. The ministry has also expanded international outreach programmes and worked towards strengthening research, education, and regulatory frameworks related to AYUSH systems.
The extension is expected to provide continuity to several ongoing initiatives being pursued by the ministry at both national and international levels.
Naga Subramanyam’s Deputation Extended in Renewable Energy Ministry
Another important decision involves Javvadi V. Naga Subramanyam, who currently serves as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The government has revised his overall central deputation tenure and extended it up to February 15, 2027.
This effectively provides him with a seven-year deputation period at the Centre.
Subramanyam has been closely associated with several renewable energy initiatives and policy frameworks designed to accelerate India’s clean energy transition.
The extension comes at a time when India is aggressively pursuing renewable energy targets, expanding solar and wind power capacity, and working towards long-term climate commitments. Officials say continuity in leadership can help maintain momentum in large-scale energy transformation programmes currently underway.
Anand Bantia Moves to Ministry of Corporate Affairs
In another notable personnel move, Anand Bantia of the Indian Railway Accounts Service has been assigned a new responsibility.
Bantia’s tenure as Integrated Financial Adviser (IFA) at the Director level in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has been curtailed to facilitate his appointment as Private Secretary to Minister of State Harsh Malhotra in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
He will serve in the new role at the Director level from June 27, 2026, until April 26, 2031, subject to standard deputation conditions.
The appointment is being viewed as an important administrative assignment, given the growing responsibilities of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in areas such as corporate governance, regulatory oversight, company law administration, and ease-of-doing-business reforms.
Ajai Kumar Verma Gets Extension in Central Vigilance Commission
The Centre has also approved a further extension for Ajai Kumar Verma, who serves as Director in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).
An officer of the Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE), Verma has received a nine-month extension beyond July 1, 2026.
With the latest approval, he will continue serving until April 1, 2027.
The Central Vigilance Commission plays a crucial role in promoting integrity, transparency, and accountability within government institutions. As one of the country’s principal anti-corruption oversight bodies, continuity in senior leadership positions is often considered important for maintaining institutional effectiveness and ongoing investigations.
Verma has been associated with vigilance-related functions at the national level since joining the commission on deputation in July 2020.
Mamta Shifted to Ministry of Steel
The government has also approved the transfer of Mamta, a 2008-batch Indian Economic Service officer.
Previously serving as Director in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), she has now been appointed as Director in the Ministry of Steel.
The move has been made on a lateral-shift basis, and her tenure in the ministry will continue until March 31, 2029.
The Ministry of Steel plays a significant role in supporting industrial growth, infrastructure expansion, manufacturing competitiveness, and policy development for one of the country’s core sectors. Officials believe her experience in industrial policy and economic administration will contribute to ongoing initiatives within the ministry.
Government Focuses on Continuity and Experienced Leadership
The latest set of orders reflects a broader administrative strategy of retaining experienced officers in key positions while simultaneously redeploying talent to areas where their expertise can contribute to policy execution and governance outcomes.
The affected sectors cover some of the government’s most important priorities, including:
Census and citizen registration administration
Traditional medicine and AYUSH promotion
Renewable energy and sustainability initiatives
Vigilance and anti-corruption oversight
Corporate affairs and regulatory governance
Industrial development and steel sector policy
Administrative experts note that such extensions and strategic postings help maintain continuity in long-term programmes while ensuring that ministries benefit from experienced leadership during critical phases of implementation.
With several flagship government initiatives currently underway, the latest bureaucratic reshuffle underscores the Centre’s continued emphasis on stability, institutional knowledge, and effective policy delivery across ministries.
