The Punjab Government has issued a show cause notice to Amritsar Municipal Commissioner, IAS officer Gulpreet Singh Aulakh, for alleged negligence in maintaining the city’s sanitation standards. He has been instructed to submit a detailed explanation within 24 hours.
Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh confirmed on Monday that the notice was issued in response to a growing number of public and media complaints about the worsening cleanliness situation in Amritsar over recent months.
“We have received numerous concerns from both citizens and the media about poor sanitation conditions in Amritsar. This issue cannot be ignored,” Dr. Singh stated. “Given the seriousness of the matter, the Municipal Commissioner has been asked to clarify his position without delay.”
The minister stressed that Amritsar, as a city of great religious and historical importance, requires special attention to cleanliness and public health systems.
Dr. Singh also issued a statewide directive to municipal bodies across Punjab, urging them to ramp up sanitation efforts ahead of the summer season. He warned of increased risks from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria, and called for proactive and thorough cleanliness drives in urban areas.
Reiterating the state government’s firm stance against administrative negligence, Dr. Singh added, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, we are committed to providing transparent and responsible governance. Laxity during duty hours will not be tolerated.”
He further warned that any future negligence or misconduct by officials or staff would result in strict disciplinary action.
