UP DGP Rajeev Krishna Orders AI Tools, Global-Standard Training for ATS to Counter Modern Terror Threats
In a decisive move to strengthen counter-terror capabilities, Rajeev Krishna, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre and the Director General of Police (DGP), has directed sweeping upgrades for the state’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). The directive, issued during a comprehensive inspection of the ATS headquarters, emphasizes the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, advanced surveillance systems, and global-standard commando training to prepare personnel for evolving, technology-driven threats.
Focus on Technology-Driven Policing
Highlighting the changing nature of terrorism, Krishna noted that modern threats are increasingly digital and technology-enabled, requiring real-time intelligence and advanced monitoring. He instructed ATS units to adopt:
AI-enabled monitoring tools
Advanced data analytics systems
Integrated surveillance platforms
These technologies will be deployed to track suspicious activities across social media platforms and encrypted communication channels, where terror networks are known to operate.
Strengthening Cyber and Intelligence Infrastructure
Officials briefed the DGP on recent inductions of modern equipment under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, including:
Cyber monitoring infrastructure
Digital forensics capabilities
Intelligence coordination systems
Krishna stressed the importance of seamless coordination between field units and central intelligence agencies through secure, technology-driven communication networks, ensuring faster and more reliable information flow.
Push for Global-Standard Commando Training
A major highlight of the inspection was the emphasis on capacity building through intensive training for ATS commandos. The DGP directed:
High-intensity, specialized training modules
Regular mock drills simulating real-life terror scenarios
Training in hostage rescue, urban warfare, and IED neutralisation
He also called for collaboration with elite institutions such as the National Security Guard (NSG) to ensure ATS personnel receive exposure to global-standard counter-terror training.
Institutionalising Mock Drills and Real-Time Response
Krishna underscored the need to institutionalise mock drills to sharpen tactical precision and reduce response times. These drills will simulate:
Hostage crises
Urban combat situations
Improvised explosive device (IED) threats
Such exercises are expected to significantly enhance operational readiness and ensure coordinated responses during real incidents.
Upgrading Infrastructure to Global Standards
During the inspection, the DGP reviewed existing training facilities at the ATS headquarters and directed officials to continuously upgrade them to global standards. The focus will be on creating a modern, well-equipped training environment capable of supporting advanced tactical and technological learning.
Enhancing Operational Effectiveness
Krishna emphasized the importance of adopting both national and international best practices in counter-terrorism. By integrating advanced training with cutting-edge technology, the ATS is expected to significantly enhance its operational effectiveness and preparedness against emerging threats. With terrorism evolving rapidly in the digital age, the Uttar Pradesh Police is gearing up to modernise its approach. The DGP’s directives signal a strong commitment to building a future-ready ATS, capable of tackling complex security challenges with precision, speed, and efficiency.
