SVPNPA Sexual Assault Case: Court Rejects Interim Bail Plea of Trainee IPS Officer Uday Krishna Reddy; Investigation Continues
The legal proceedings involving trainee IPS officer Uday Krishna Reddy, who is facing allegations of sexual assault, abuse and blackmail made by a fellow trainee officer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, moved forward on Tuesday after the Rajendranagar Metropolitan Magistrate Court rejected his application for interim bail.
Reddy had sought temporary bail to appear before an internal inquiry committee constituted by the National Police Academy to examine the allegations against him. The court, however, declined to grant interim relief, meaning the trainee officer will remain in judicial custody while both the criminal investigation and the Academy’s internal proceedings continue independently.
The latest order comes days after the Telangana High Court also refused to grant him interim protection, indicating that the courts are allowing the investigation to proceed in accordance with law.
Interim Bail Sought to Attend Internal Inquiry
According to submissions made before the court, the trainee IPS officer requested interim bail solely for the purpose of participating in the proceedings of the internal inquiry committee established by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.
The committee has been constituted by the Academy to examine the allegations raised by the complainant while the police simultaneously investigate the criminal case. After hearing the matter, the Rajendranagar Metropolitan Magistrate Court rejected the interim bail application on August 4, thereby keeping the accused in judicial custody.
The order means that any request for temporary release will now have to be considered through subsequent legal proceedings, if pursued.
Telangana High Court Had Earlier Declined Interim Relief
The rejection by the Magistrate Court follows an earlier setback for the trainee officer before the Telangana High Court. Reddy had approached the High Court seeking to quash the First Information Report (FIR) registered against him and also sought interim protection during the pendency of the proceedings.
The High Court, however, did not grant interim relief and adjourned the matter for further consideration. The petition challenging the FIR has now been listed for hearing on August 26, when the court is expected to examine the issues raised by both sides. Until then, the criminal investigation will continue under the supervision of the investigating agency.
Complaint Filed by Fellow Trainee IPS Officer
The criminal case originated from a complaint filed by a woman trainee IPS officer who was undergoing training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Shivarampally, Hyderabad.
In her complaint, she alleged that Uday Krishna Reddy sexually assaulted her, subjected her to abuse and attempted to blackmail her during their period of training at the Academy. Based on the complaint, the Attapur Police Station registered an FIR on July 18, initiating a criminal investigation into the allegations.
The case quickly drew nationwide attention because it involved two trainee officers from India’s premier police training institution and sparked widespread public discussion on social media. The allegations remain under investigation, and the courts are yet to determine the merits of the case.
Arrest After Search by Investigators
Following registration of the FIR, investigators attempted to serve notices to the accused at two official addresses in Hyderabad. According to the police, the trainee officer could not initially be located and officials were also unable to establish contact with him through his mobile phone. Investigators subsequently stated that they believed he was avoiding the investigation.
After a search operation, the Hyderabad Task Force traced him at Damaracherla in Nalgonda district, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, on July 28. The following day, he was brought to the Attapur Police Station, where his arrest was formally recorded in connection with the FIR.
Judicial Custody and Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is being conducted by DCP Lavanya Naik, who heads the Women’s Safety Wing, along with Inspector Jyotsna. After recording the accused’s statement, the investigating team produced him before the competent court.
He was subsequently presented before the Upparpally Court, which remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. Since then, he has been lodged at Chanchalguda Central Prison. Meanwhile, investigators have also moved the Rajendranagar court seeking police custody of the accused to facilitate custodial interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation. That application is still pending before the court, and a decision is awaited.
Medical Episode Following Registration of FIR
Soon after the criminal case was registered, Uday Krishna Reddy was admitted to Jayanti Hospital in SR Nagar. According to reports, members of his family informed authorities that they had found what they believed to be a suicide note, raising concerns that he may have attempted to take his own life.
However, a subsequent medical examination reportedly concluded that he had lost consciousness due to excessive alcohol consumption and did not medically confirm an attempted suicide. The medical findings have since formed part of the overall sequence of events examined during the investigation.
Accused Earlier Denied Evading Investigation
Before his arrest, the trainee IPS officer gave an interview to a local television news channel in which he denied allegations that he had deliberately absconded. He stated that he had been staying in his native village of Ullapalem in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district, explaining that his grandmother had fallen ill after learning about the allegations against him.
Reddy acknowledged that the police had attempted to serve notices but claimed that the addresses visited by investigators were only temporary places where he had stayed. He maintained that he had not intentionally avoided the investigation. These statements have been made by the accused and are part of the broader legal proceedings currently before the courts.
Investigation and Court Proceedings Continue
With both the Telangana High Court and the Rajendranagar Metropolitan Magistrate Court declining to grant interim relief, Uday Krishna Reddy continues to remain in judicial custody while the investigation progresses. The High Court is scheduled to hear his petition seeking quashing of the FIR on August 26, while the trial court is yet to decide the police application seeking custodial interrogation.
As the investigation moves forward, both the criminal proceedings and the Academy’s internal inquiry are expected to continue simultaneously. The allegations against the trainee IPS officer remain subject to judicial scrutiny, and the outcome of the case will ultimately depend on the evidence presented before the courts.
