U. Sagayam, a 2001 batch promotee IAS officer renowned across Tamil Nadu for his unwavering stance against corruption, has once again made headlines — this time for his absence at a crucial court hearing in the infamous granite scam case.

Previously appointed as Legal Commissioner by the Madras High Court to investigate illegal granite mining operations, Mr. Sagayam has cited a serious threat to his life following the withdrawal of his government-provided security cover.

Security Withdrawal Raises Alarms

In a letter addressed to the government counsel, Mr. Sagayam explained that his non-appearance at the Madurai court was due to safety concerns, as the Tamil Nadu government recently withdrew his personal security detail. His letter has triggered widespread public concern and media attention, with critics questioning the timing and reasoning behind the removal of his security.

A Key Witness in a Landmark Corruption Case

The Tamil Nadu granite scam, involving allegations of massive illegal quarrying and deep-rooted corruption, is considered one of the most significant mining scandals in the state. Mr. Sagayam’s testimony is seen as crucial due to his direct role in exposing irregularities during his tenure as Madurai District Collector and later as an official investigator.

Police Assure Protection Amid Public Support

In response to the growing outcry, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal assured the public that Mr. Sagayam’s safety is being treated as a top priority.

“We are taking the matter seriously. Adequate police protection will be provided to ensure Mr. Sagayam can attend court without fear,” the DGP stated.

The move has prompted strong support from public figures, activists, and citizens alike, who have commended Sagayam for his integrity and dedication to justice. Many have demanded the immediate reinstatement of his security so he can safely present his much-awaited testimony.

Who is U. Sagayam?

Mr. Sagayam began his civil service journey by clearing the Civil Services Examination in 1989 and joining the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). After completing his training and serving for seven months in New Delhi, he voluntarily resigned from the CSS.

He later qualified through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) and entered the Tamil Nadu State Civil Service.
