Who Is IPS Amarendra Singh Sengar? Lucknow Police Commissioner Set for Early Promotion as DG After Sujeet Pandey’s SVPNPA Appointment

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amarendra Singh Sengar (IPS:1995) is poised to receive an early promotion to the rank of Director General (DG) in the Uttar Pradesh Police following a significant development in the state’s senior police leadership.

The opportunity has arisen after Sujeet Pandey (IPS:1994) formally assumed charge as the Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad, on July 15, 2026. His appointment to the country’s premier police training institution has created a vacancy at the DG level in the Uttar Pradesh Police, paving the way for Sengar’s elevation ahead of schedule.

The move is being seen as an important administrative development in the state’s police hierarchy, with Amarendra Singh Sengar expected to join the top rank of the force sooner than originally anticipated.

DG-Level Vacancy Opens After Sujeet Pandey Moves to SVPNPA

The reshuffle at the senior-most level of the police administration began after Sujeet Pandey took charge as Director of SVPNPA, the academy responsible for training Indian Police Service officers from across the country.

Pandey had been relieved by the Uttar Pradesh government on July 10 to enable him to assume his new assignment at the Centre. With his formal joining in Hyderabad now complete, a Director General-level vacancy has opened in the Uttar Pradesh Police establishment.

This administrative development has accelerated the promotion process for Amarendra Singh Sengar, who was already among the senior-most officers eligible for elevation.

Promotion Advanced by More Than a Month

Before this development, Amarendra Singh Sengar was expected to be promoted to the DG rank only after the retirement of Ashok Mutha Jain (IPS:1995) on August 30, 2026.

However, the vacancy created by Sujeet Pandey’s central appointment has altered the sequence of promotions within the state police.

As a result, Sengar’s elevation is now likely to take place well before the previously expected date, advancing his promotion by more than a month.

An official notification regarding the promotion is expected from the Uttar Pradesh government in the coming days.

Who Is IPS Amarendra Singh Sengar?

Amarendra Singh Sengar, also known as Amrendra Kumar Sengar, belongs to the 1995 batch of the Indian Police Service and is an officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.

Over the course of a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades, he has served in several challenging operational, investigative and leadership roles both within Uttar Pradesh and on central deputation.

Known for his experience in law and order management, intelligence operations and disaster response, Sengar has built a reputation as one of the state’s most seasoned police officers.

Born on January 1, 1970, in Chhapra, Bihar, he holds a Master’s degree in Political Science, a background that has complemented his administrative and policing career.

Currently Serving as Lucknow Police Commissioner

At present, Amarendra Singh Sengar is serving as the Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, a position he has held since June 2024.

As Police Commissioner of the state capital, he has been responsible for overseeing policing in one of India’s largest and most strategically important cities.

His tenure has focused on strengthening urban policing systems, improving crime prevention strategies, expanding the use of technology in law enforcement and enhancing public safety across Lucknow.

His leadership has involved managing law and order during major public events, strengthening intelligence coordination and improving police responsiveness in the city.

Extensive Experience Across Uttar Pradesh

Throughout his IPS career, Sengar has served in a wide variety of operational assignments across Uttar Pradesh.

His important postings have included:

Additional Director General, Lucknow Zone
Inspector General (Law and Order)
Inspector General, Varanasi Zone
Deputy Inspector General in Gorakhpur Range
Deputy Inspector General in Moradabad Range
Deputy Inspector General in Basti Range

Apart from these senior assignments, he has also served as Superintendent of Police (SP) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in nine different districts, giving him extensive grassroots policing experience across diverse regions of the state.

His long field experience has exposed him to policing challenges ranging from communal harmony and crime control to public order and intelligence coordination.

Significant Central Deputation Experience

Sengar’s administrative experience extends beyond Uttar Pradesh.

During his central deputation, he served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Union Home Minister between 2017 and 2019, a role that involved close coordination on matters related to internal security and national policing.

He has also served in two important central armed organisations.

His central assignments include:

Inspector General, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)

These positions provided him with valuable experience in border management, disaster preparedness, emergency response and national security administration.

Expertise Across Multiple Policing Domains

Over the years, Amarendra Singh Sengar has developed expertise in several critical areas of policing.

His professional experience includes:

Law and order management

Prestigious National Defence College Training

In 2022, Sengar successfully completed the 62nd National Defence College (NDC) Course, one of India’s most prestigious strategic leadership programmes.

The course is attended by senior officers from the armed forces, civil services and police organisations, focusing on national security, strategic affairs, governance and public administration.

Completion of the programme further strengthened his credentials for higher leadership responsibilities.

Promotion Reflects Administrative Seniority

The expected promotion is largely the result of the vacancy created after Sujeet Pandey’s move to SVPNPA.

As one of the senior-most eligible IPS officers of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Sengar is now set to move into the Director General rank ahead of the normal schedule.

The elevation is expected to strengthen the senior leadership of the Uttar Pradesh Police at a time when the force continues to focus on modern policing, crime prevention, technology-driven investigations and public safety initiatives.

Awaiting Formal Government Order

Although the promotion is widely expected, the final elevation will take effect after the Uttar Pradesh government issues its formal notification.

Once approved, Amarendra Singh Sengar will officially join the rank of Director General, marking another important milestone in a policing career that has included significant contributions at both the state and national levels.

With decades of experience in operational policing, intelligence, disaster management and administrative leadership, Sengar’s elevation is expected to add further strength to the senior command structure of the Uttar Pradesh Police.
