Centre Extends Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Dr M. Sai Kumar’s Tenure by Six Months Till February 2027; S. Krishnan to Continue as MeitY Secretary
ACC Clears Extension for 1990-Batch IAS Officer Beyond Retirement, Bringing Continuity to Tamil Nadu’s Top Bureaucratic Post and Ending Speculation Over S. Krishnan’s Return from the Centre
The Central Government has approved a six-month extension in the tenure of Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Dr M. Sai Kumar, allowing the senior IAS officer to continue as the state’s top bureaucrat until February 28, 2027.
The decision, cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), enables the 1990-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer to remain in office beyond his scheduled retirement on August 31, 2026. His extended tenure will commence on September 1, 2026, ensuring continuity in the administration during an important period for the state.
The move also settles months of speculation over the succession to Tamil Nadu’s highest bureaucratic post. With the extension now approved, S. Krishnan, the 1989-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer currently serving as Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), will continue in his assignment at the Centre instead of returning to the state to assume charge as Chief Secretary.
The extension marks another significant administrative decision by the Centre and reinforces the government’s preference for continuity in Tamil Nadu’s top bureaucracy.
Six-Month Extension Brings Stability to State Administration
Dr M. Sai Kumar was originally scheduled to retire on August 31, 2026, after a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in the Indian Administrative Service.
With the latest approval, he will now continue to head the Tamil Nadu bureaucracy until February 28, 2027, or until any further decision by the competent authority.
The Tamil Nadu government had reportedly sought a three-month extension for the incumbent Chief Secretary. The Centre, however, approved an even longer extension of six months, allowing him to remain in office through a crucial administrative period.
The decision is expected to ensure policy continuity across key departments while maintaining stability in the state’s administrative leadership.
S. Krishnan’s Repatriation No Longer Under Consideration
For several months, bureaucratic circles had been abuzz with reports that S. Krishnan, presently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), could be repatriated to Tamil Nadu to take over as Chief Secretary after Dr Sai Kumar’s retirement.
Although such speculation continued for some time, indications had emerged recently that his return to the state cadre was unlikely.
The Centre’s decision to extend Dr Sai Kumar’s tenure has now effectively ended those discussions.
As a result, S. Krishnan is expected to continue leading one of the Union Government’s most significant ministries, which is spearheading India’s digital governance initiatives, semiconductor ecosystem, electronics manufacturing expansion and artificial intelligence programmes.
The development also means that Tamil Nadu will retain continuity at the level of Chief Secretary without any immediate change in administrative leadership.
Second Chief Secretary in Recent Years to Receive an Extension
Dr Sai Kumar becomes the second Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary in recent years to receive an extension beyond the normal age of superannuation.
Earlier, during the COVID-19 pandemic, K. Shanmugam, a retired 1985-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer, was granted two successive three-month extensions while serving as Chief Secretary.
Those extensions were approved in view of the extraordinary administrative challenges posed by the pandemic and the need for continuity in governance.
The latest decision reflects another instance where the Centre has opted to retain experienced leadership at the highest level of the state’s bureaucracy.

Continuity at the Top of Tamil Nadu Bureaucracy

With the extension now in place, Dr Sai Kumar will continue to guide the Tamil Nadu administration until February 28, 2027, providing experienced leadership as the state pursues its governance priorities and developmental agenda over the coming months.
