2006-Batch Officer Faces BJP Allegations Over Varanasi MLC Vote Counting

Who Is IAS Pranjal Yadav? 2006-Batch Officer Faces BJP Allegations Over Varanasi MLC Vote Counting

Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Pranjal Yadav has once again found himself at the centre of a political controversy in Varanasi, following allegations of bias levelled by BJP leaders during the counting of votes for the Varanasi Graduate Constituency of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

Yadav, a 2006-batch IAS officer, was serving as an election observer during the counting process held on October 27 and 28. BJP leaders and workers questioned his impartiality, alleging that he favoured the Samajwadi Party during the proceedings.

The controversy has revived memories of an earlier political confrontation involving Yadav during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when he was serving as the District Magistrate of Varanasi.

At the time, a dispute over permission for a proposed election rally by Narendra Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, had brought the officer into the national political spotlight. While the latest allegations have triggered fresh political debate, no independent finding establishing bias on Yadav’s part has been cited in the available reports.

Who Is IAS Pranjal Yadav?

Pranjal Yadav is a 2006-batch Indian Administrative Service officer belonging to the Uttar Pradesh cadre. An engineering graduate, he holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering.

During his administrative career, Yadav has occupied several important positions in the Uttar Pradesh government, including the crucial assignment of District Magistrate of Varanasi.

His association with the politically significant city dates back to 2013, when he took charge of its district administration. His tenure coincided with one of the most consequential electoral contests in recent Indian political history, the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. His administrative responsibilities during that period brought him into direct focus amid political disagreements over election-related decisions.

The 2014 Varanasi Rally Controversy Involving Narendra Modi

Pranjal Yadav first attracted considerable political attention in 2014, when he was serving as the District Magistrate of Varanasi.During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Narendra Modi, who was contesting from Varanasi as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, was scheduled to address an election rally at Beniabagh ground.

However, a controversy erupted after permission for the proposed rally was not granted. The BJP strongly objected to the decision, making it a major issue during the high-profile election campaign.

As the district’s administrative head, Yadav was associated with the decision-making process concerning the rally permission. The episode triggered sharp political reactions and brought his name into the national political discourse. The controversy subsequently became an important reference point in discussions surrounding his administrative tenure in Varanasi.

BJP Questions Pranjal Yadav’s Role in Varanasi MLC Vote Counting

More than a decade later, Yadav has again attracted political attention over his role in the Varanasi Graduate Constituency election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

He was appointed as an election observer for the counting process, which began on October 27 and continued into October 28. Polling for the relevant Legislative Council constituencies across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Bihar had taken place on October 23.

During the counting proceedings in Varanasi, BJP leaders and supporters staged a protest outside the counting centre at Paharia Mandi, raising objections to the manner in which the process was being conducted. BJP candidate Kedarnath Singh and his supporters questioned the conduct of the counting exercise and raised concerns about Yadav’s role as the election observer.

The protesters alleged that the officer was favouring the Samajwadi Party candidate and demanded that his conduct be examined. Slogans were also raised against Yadav and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav.

These allegations, however, remain political claims and should not be treated as established findings of electoral misconduct.

BJP Demands Action Over Alleged Partiality

The controversy intensified as BJP leaders questioned the transparency and impartiality of the counting process.Party representatives alleged irregularities and sought action against the election observer, arguing that the proceedings had raised serious concerns about the fairness of the electoral exercise. The dispute also unfolded amid competing political claims over the Varanasi MLC election results.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav separately raised concerns over the handling of the counting process, alleging that the declaration of his party candidate’s victory was being withheld. The competing allegations added another dimension to the political confrontation surrounding the Varanasi Graduate Constituency.

Why Has the 2014 Episode Returned to the Spotlight?

The latest controversy has once again drawn attention to Pranjal Yadav’s earlier tenure as Varanasi District Magistrate, particularly the 2014 dispute over permission for Narendra Modi’s election rally.

BJP leaders have invoked that episode while questioning his impartiality in the latest MLC election assignment. The two incidents, separated by more than twelve years, have placed the IAS officer at the centre of political discussions in Varanasi on two significant electoral occasions.

For now, the allegations concerning the October 2026 counting process remain contested. Any conclusion regarding the officer’s conduct would require examination by the competent election authorities or other appropriate forums.

The episode nevertheless highlights how administrative decisions involving politically sensitive elections can place senior bureaucrats under intense public and political scrutiny.
